The staff did their best with a bad situation, so my complaint is with management and ownership. For $138 a night, this place was worse than $50 dive motels I’ve stayed in, and I won’t return. The hotel is being updated, but it shouldn’t be taking guests in this condition. Our first room’s heating and cooling unit didn’t work. The second had heat, but only one working outlet by the TV and one working light, in the bathroom. It was almost 10 p.m. and we were exhausted. In the morning there were no bath towels, so I had to dry off with three hand towels. I don’t understand why Hilton lets its name be associated with this flop. As a new Hilton Honors member, I’m rethinking that, too. Maybe Hilton isn’t what it used to be. I can stay somewhere much cheaper with much better accommodations.

After a nine-hour drive from out of town, we arrived around 10 p.m. for the three-night stay I’d booked in November 2025. The room was awful: the toilet and outlets didn’t work, it was dirty, and there were no hangers. Staff moved us to another room, and we stayed the night, but the next morning loud banging went on for over an hour while we were resting. We left before noon. The manager said we’d get credit for two nights because of the inconvenience, but it never came. The booking site says it can’t refund us under its no-refund policy, and now the hotel manager denies having promised a credit. I wouldn’t stay here because I don’t trust the staff or the cleanliness.

We checked in online, but couldn’t get into our room because the door wasn’t working properly. A staff member had followed us into the elevator with a clipboard and immediately said she’d move us when the door failed. The replacement room had no tub stopper, which we needed so our young children could bathe. At the desk, we were asked if they couldn’t just shower instead. Staff offered another room across the hall, but it also had no stopper. We were told nothing else could be done because our room was renovated, so we stuffed a washcloth in the drain. Later, every spot marked “ice and vending” had only ice. The only soda option in the hotel was from the poorly stocked coolers at the front desk.

Update: Management replied to my review and spoke with me by phone about a resolution. I appreciate that they made an effort after the fact. We’ve stayed at Hilton Honors hotels several times before and had nice, clean, comfortable rooms. This visit was different. Most of the Hampton Inn was being remodeled, including rooms on our floor, instead of closing one floor at a time. At $200 a night, that was unacceptable. Hallways were in poor condition, and nearby gutted rooms had open doors with no knobs, so anyone could walk in. A young child could get hurt in one of them. Our family had three rooms for a wedding. Our beds were comfortable and we had hot water, but the sink pressure dwindled to a trickle. The other rooms had cold water and plumbing problems. We got no discount or refund, even though I’ve never stayed at a hotel under construction that offered guests nothing. There was banging and loud slamming throughout our stay. I don’t know why the hotel was open during this work; the renovation should have been disclosed, or done one floor at a time. Nobody wants to pay top dollar for a stay like this. I wouldn’t recommend it.

The staff were friendly, professional, and genuinely helpful. They were the one bright spot during my two-night business stay. The hotel’s location in a higher-end part of Birmingham is great, but the property fell well below Hampton Inn standards and disappointed me. Renovations are underway, but I’m concerned the hotel was allowed to get into such poor shape first. The hallways had scratched walls, chipped paint, and stained carpet. My room was worse: stained carpet, scuffed and peeling walls and doorframes, and a marked-up HVAC unit. The furniture looked like it had come from a child’s playroom. The stained bathtub and dirty caulking made the bathroom feel neglected, not just dated. I understand renovations take time, but the Hampton Inn name shouldn’t be attached to a place that’s declined this far. Hilton should check that the property meets brand expectations when the work is complete. Until then, I can’t recommend staying here.
