Sleep Inn & Suites Birmingham - Hoover

Everyone and everything at Sleep Inn and Suites made a difficult visit so much better. My mother and I were a mess because my brother was in very critical condition at UAB Hospital. We found the hotel on Google because it was close, about 9 miles away, and easily booked the first two nights online. We ended up extending for three more nights. The rooms were clean, and the staff were kind and helpful. I'll be back to UAB fairly soon, and now I know where I'll stay. Thank you, Sleep Inn and Suites, for everything.

Two days after checkout I checked my bank account to see whether the $100 incidentals hold had dropped off, and instead there was another hotel charge. When I called, I got the same employee who'd yelled at us at checkout. He was rude again and gave several different explanations that didn't seem true. I said I'd contact Choice Hotels corporate because I felt misled and jerked around. Corporate told me there are no late fees at their hotels, so the employee had lied to me on our first night. They also explained that the pet fee was charged every night, not just once as he'd said. The corporate representative couldn't refund it because I hadn't been told about the fee, but did file a complaint about the front desk employee, who was actually the manager. At checkout, the same staff member had verbally accosted my fiancé as she took our bags to the car, shouting that she needed to check out. I stepped in and firmly said I was handling the account. He shouted back, asking why I was “being so scary”. I told him I was frustrated because staff had woken us several times before checkout to ask about cleaning the room before we left. I said that part wasn't his fault, but yelling at my fiancé was his fault and inappropriate. He replied, “I do not care you can go now goodbye”, and waved us toward the door. The trouble began before we arrived. I called the day before to ask if a check-in around 11:30 p.m. to midnight would be an issue, since we were traveling from out of town. The person on the phone said no, because the lobby was staffed 24 hours a day. In fact, there was nobody in the lobby, just a virtual check-in screen connected to someone off-site. The person at the screen said late fees might apply but that he'd ask his manager to reduce them. He took my card payment for a pet fee, which he described as a one-time $35 charge, and then said he could waive the late fees. I travel a lot and usually don't complain about leisure stays, but the front desk and management service at Sleep Inn & Suites on Colonnade Parkway in Birmingham was terrible. Save yourself the headache and don't stay there.

The room was spacious and clean, and the bed and pillows were comfortable. The desk clerks were polite and helpful at check-in. It's in a great spot near restaurants.

Bugs were crawling all over our bags and clothes in the room. Management knew about it and didn't seem surprised. With what they charge for rooms, this place needs pest control immediately.
