Howard Johnson Express Inn - Blackwood

We come down from Massachusetts at least twice a year, usually around Thanksgiving and again in February or April during the kids’ school break, to see family. We ALWAYS stay at the Ho-Jo. We usually arrive late, and the older gentleman who checks us in is very nice. But Alison is the best part of our visits. She’s the breakfast attendant, always smiling, asking about everyone’s trip, and being so kind. She’s the most pleasant, beautiful soul. My two kids get so excited to see her. Give that woman a raise, she’s the heart of your mornings. 🫶🏼♥️

The staff were extremely pleasant, welcoming, and helpful, though breakfast was a little lacking compared with other hotels. Daylight showed through both the front and rear doors, and air blew right in. Paint was peeling badly on all the doors. The microwave was so poor and noisy it sounded like it might explode, and the room definitely needs updating. TV choices were very limited. They should get smart TVs so guests can use their personal streaming services.

The young man who checked me in was super friendly, and I think he owns the place or his family does. All the staff were amazing and did whatever they could for you. The free breakfast was delicious: waffles, bagels, white and wheat toast, cereal, jelly, cream cheese, and fresh fruit. Even the bananas were fresh every day. You know how some places leave them until they start turning brown? Not this place. It’s those little things that matter.

The location is good, with lots of things within walking distance even though it’s on a major road. The room was clean, and I found out they have rooms with huge tubs or jacuzzis. The doors were a little sticky, and the mattress could probably use refreshing, but it had an encasement, which was great to see. The fitness room was bare bones, but it works.
