The National Hotel

We marked our 32nd anniversary on the beautiful porch, with its wonderful views. Dinner was lovely, too: delicious baked brie, fresh tuna, and excellent scallops. Our server remembered the occasion and congratulated us. Another lovely evening at The National Hotel.

The staff were very friendly and helpful, and for a relaxing summer weekend the hotel was perfectly fine. It sits right in “town,” no more than 100 yards from the ferry, and is an old place, not a luxury hotel. The rooms are a decent size but basic, with old furniture. The drawers in my chest were falling apart, and the toilet had a shelf that's much too small for toiletries. I was also fascinated to learn I needed the manager's permission to set the AC below 72 degrees. Keep in mind there is no elevator. There are lots of steps to the front desk unless you use the back door, then more stairs to the rooms. Rates are very high for what you get at a summer resort.

Sitting on the deck was awesome, and our server was friendly and helpful. The lobster was delicious and fairly priced. Easily the best meal I had on the Block. Can't wait to go back to the National.

I've been a summer guest for many years, and once again the whole stay left me with relaxing, fun memories. The rooms are comfortable and well kept, the food is delicious, and the music and fire pits make the place feel cozy. Everyone on the National's staff is cheerful, helpful, and accommodating. I don't know how they keep that pace while making everything run so smoothly, but they do. I hate when the visit ends.
