The place is new and has a lot going for it, though it still needs some fine tuning. This was my third stay, and probably my last. The first two were fine, but this visit wasn't. Any time I use points, the room seems to be below par. Also, the shuttle only runs from 5am to 12am, so an early flight leaves you stuck. When I turned on the heat, the room filled with a horrible perfume smell. I have asthma, so I had to wear a mask.
The staff made this place feel welcoming every time, whether I was checking in, asking something, or just passing through the lobby. They're consistently friendly and attentive. The rooms are spacious, almost studio-like, with a full-size fridge, microwave, coffee maker, dishwasher, utensils, and a burner available from the front desk if you want one. The bed was comfortable, there was plenty of hot water, and everything felt clean and updated. The bright colors give the place a fresh look. The gym is open around the clock with your key fob, and it's well equipped. Guest laundry is free, which is a great perk. Bring detergent or buy some downstairs. The building is shared with another hotel, so check which key fob you're using for the gym and laundry. The pool looked well kept, though I haven't tried it. A few things to know: parking costs $10 a day. The breakfast is standard hotel fare, with instant oatmeal as the closest thing to a healthy choice, but coffee, tea, and hot chocolate are always available in the lobby. Wi-Fi can be finicky, especially with a VPN or the non-premium option, and may ask you to re-enter details. The main crossing to Mall of America can take a while, though the mall is just across the street to the southeast. You can't see the hotel from the corner because the bright red WhirlyBall building blocks it, and Google Maps can put you in the wrong parking lot. The Blue Line and several buses stop at the mall, with connections to the airport, downtown, and elsewhere. Tip: look for the Big Bird 😎
We had a Christmas party for 35, and they made everyone feel so welcome. The place was clean, the staff were kind, and it was a wonderful stay. We even locked our keys in the car, and Manuel and Tahil were a huge help. Thank you! This was literally the best stay I've ever had. We'll be back!
In 2021 my coworker and I both got laid off, so we decided to share hotel rooms and were moving around every week. We found this place and stayed from May through July for $80 a night. They cleaned the room whenever we forgot to put out the do not disturb sign, and guests could use the washer and dryers for free. We felt really spoiled. When we left for Denver for a week and came back, the room had had a deep clean, our clothes were folded, and the coffee and creamer were restocked. It felt like such a blessing. The staff were kind and understanding, and most of them knew us as long-term residents and were awesome. There was one serious incident. A staff member grabbed my six-year-old son, who is mixed, and said, "he isnt yours." My roommate and I were careful not to travel separately if that man was working afterward. My son was terrified and said, "Mommy tell him to let go. Shes my mommy. My only parent. Let me go." I told the man, "Hes more mine than he is anyone else's," then called the manager and asked her to get his grip off my son's arm and talk to him about being self aware. She demanded that he release my son and apologized repeatedly. I felt unsafe around that staff member after that, though not the others. My son is 10 now and still brings it up, so I know it left a lasting mark on him. During our stay we saved a decent amount of money, bought a home, got engaged, and I was pregnant with another baby before we moved out. This is our favorite story to tell about how we became a family, and I feel like the hotel and its staff played some part in making it happen. One side note: don't stay at penn home2suites. They don't compare. In July, when our water heater went out, I was charged $7600 for a week that was supposed to cost $98 a night. I had to sort it out with the bank after home2suites penn ave insisted they were right. The bank blocked more charges after they kept trying to charge above what I'd signed for and paid.
We had plenty of space for our family of five, and the rooms have lots of thoughtfully designed storage. The full-size fridge and dishwasher made it easy to prepare our own meals. The hotel was clean and very nice, with laundry on site and a modern workout room. Breakfast was included, fresh, and offered lots of choices. The only thing we wished for was a hot tub by the pool.
