David made my husband and me feel so welcome when we stayed last October. The Lotus sits high on the mountain in beautiful Bolton Valley, surrounded by autumn reds, golds, and fiery orange trees. It was quiet, lovely, and clean. We were greeted by a stone fireplace and big cozy couches, then shown around. Our clean room had a wood-burning stove that was just right for the early October Vermont chill. I also enjoyed the hot tub and sauna, the tasty spring water, and coconut milk in my morning coffee. Since I practice yoga, having a space for it was a treat while my husband napped by the fire. Waterbury and Stowe were about 15 minutes away, so the spot worked well for us, with some distance from the crowds on a busy three-day weekend. David and I talked by the fireplace during some downtime, and his openness was soothing. I’m late writing this, but wanted to thank him. It was an awesome retreat for visiting Vermont while getting some space from the tourism.

The good parts were the couples massage, breakfast, and the fireplace in the main room. Our therapists were skilled and kind, though hearing them discuss our “confidential” intake forms in front of other guests in the lobby felt uncomfortable. The granola and pancakes were great, and the people were nice. It seemed like they meant well, but my partner and I had hoped for a rejuvenating weekend and left disappointed and uncomfortable. Our room had heavily stained bedding and a stained chair. The shower water wasn’t hot, though it seems they fixed that, and the hot tub and sauna were out of order for one of the days. The decks hadn’t been shoveled and couldn’t be accessed. Food was limited to one menu served at set times, and the walls were so thin that we could chat with our neighbors through them one morning. This might work for people needing a place to crash after skiing, but I wouldn’t choose it for a clean, professional, relaxing spa retreat.

It had a warm, homey bed-and-breakfast feel, with simple, straightforward rooms and a bohemian healing vibe. My kids and I loved it, and the owner was super nice and welcoming. It isn’t a fancy hotel, but I’d happily return. My one complaint is that the walkway wasn’t shoveled, which was tough with two small children. Otherwise, we thought the place was awesome!

We were hiking the Long Trail and regretted not saving the money and sleeping in the woods. It felt overpriced, with repeated attempts to charge extra. Breakfast wasn’t included, and the shuttle to the trailhead cost extra too. The yoga studio couldn’t be used because of an employee’s “sewing project,” the food was nothing special, and the kombucha bar was empty. The rooms were very dirty, with carpet that looked like it hadn’t been vacuumed in months, and the hallway seemed just as bad. There was barely any body wash, the towels were rough, and even a tip jar sat beside the tea bags. I’m a server and respect tipping, but the vibe felt off. We’d hoped to meet chill, like-minded people. It wasn’t as advertised, and with service like this they should at least charge hostel rates.

The peaceful, welcoming atmosphere made for a great stay at Lotus, and all the staff were kind and accommodating. Ricky was especially informative and welcoming when we arrived. Founder Krysta was helpful and kind too, especially when our car got stuck. She pushed and drove it out like a champ. Thank you again! I wish we’d had more time for the yoga classes and range of massages, so I guess we’ll have to come back.
