Spruce Point Inn

The views and the s'mores station staff each earn a star from me. But our room was freezing when we arrived, and the phone didn’t work. Music in the courtyard played from early morning until late at night, so sleeping was impossible. The rooms also felt worn and dated for a resort. I wouldn’t return.

The bar and restaurant food was very good, and we had some genuinely attentive servers. The general manager also listened to our concerns and made some amends for what was a substandard stay. Even so, I couldn't recommend this hotel at the high prices we paid six months ahead for two nights, 9/12-9/14. Our room was in the old main building, where we had no internet access. There's no elevator, and that wasn't advertised. At check-in nobody offered help with our luggage or parking, though I would've gladly tipped someone. The private balcony had several rotten spots in the wood and unsafe rails, and paint was peeling all over. The window air conditioner in our very expensive room was held with duct tape. The few bicycles on site were broken or badly damaged and unsafe to ride. The front desk wasn't very helpful about amenities and events. We stumbled on the lobby coffee and the nightly S'mores from 6 to 8 PM because no one told us about them. This is a very tired, old hotel and not worth what we paid.

Raymond, the boat guy, was wonderful, a good guy and one of the only American employees there. They shouldn't fire him to cut corners, because that would only make things worse. The best part for us is still the beautiful bay view and the hotel's rustic look. I like that it hasn't changed much. But the property needs upkeep. The heated pool area was dirty, and the outsides of the buildings weren't being maintained. We also need better wifi. I heard another guest, an older woman, say her room phone didn't work, and she was worried about it. What if she'd had a heart attack? We ate at the salty stag once for dinner and once for breakfast, and found it far too expensive. Even the coffee there costs four dollars, though it's the same coffee they give away in the lobby. The new management is terrible. They need to maintain the grounds and clean the pools. Either the H1B workers need to be let go or trained to look after the property.

The rooms are finished, but pretty bare bones. This might work well for families, though getting into town means driving, so you need to eat here or head out for other choices. I'd rather stay closer to town.
