The Azalea Cottage was private, cozy, and beautifully decorated, a romantic place where we felt at home right away. We loved settling in by the rustic fireplace and the delightfully luxurious sheets. We’d found good restaurants in nearby Culpeper, but our favorite part of the evening was staying in. After a day of hiking at White Oak Canyon, my significant other surprised me with a late arrival at the Inn on Thistle Hill. Shauna greeted us with so much hospitality and charisma and showed us to our reserved cottage. Frank made a phenomenal breakfast the next morning: homemade yogurt and jam, biscuits, eggs cooked how we liked them, sausage, hashbrowns, coffee, and orange juice. Everything was delicious. Frank and Shauna were easy to talk to, seemed genuinely interested in getting to know us, and shared some of their amazing story. Cell service is spotty right now, though I got decent Virgin/Sprint signal by stepping outside the cottage. For a serene, unique escape from the hustle and bustle, consider the Inn on Thistle Hill.

Beautiful place, fantastic food, and we had a terrific time. Shauna and Frank are wonderful and fun. I arrived with a migraine, and Shauna got rid of it right away with some essential oils. I was surprised, since migraines are typically very hard to get rid of. Thank you both for a wonderful weekend!

Come hungry, because Frank made my wife and me the best breakfast I’ve had in a long time. Fresh breads, homemade jams, Irish butter, eggs just how you like them, and the potatoes, oh, the potatoes! Frank and Shona, sorry if I spelled that wrong, were amazing hosts. She tends to be the night owl, up late doing her thing, which helped us a lot when we arrived much later than expected. They were also very helpful with directions to places and restaurants nearby. It’s a bit on the $$-$$$ side, but I recommend dinner at Foti's in Culpepper.

We left and stayed at a motel instead. The whole place smelled like a wet, dirty dog when my wife and I walked in. I’ve got nothing against dogs, and Hershey was a sweetie, but I didn’t want our room smelling like him. The house looked like it may once have been very nice, but now it seemed dumpy and dirty. There was a pile of dead stink bugs in the window, half-empty shampoo bottles around the tub, a broken ceiling fan, and the woman running the place couldn’t figure out how to turn on the window A/C. It was a horror show, and I wish there were a zero-star option. There was no cell service at all and no phone in the room.
