Surfside Motor Lodge

There was blood all over our room, including bloody fingerprints, and there was blood in another room too. When I reported it, they only asked whether I wanted another sheet. I wanted our money back. The customer service was awful, the place is run down, and the AC barely worked in the summer heat. There wasn’t even a basic lamp. The rooms cost too much for how unclean they were, and the bathrooms are tiny. There’s little privacy on the balcony, since someone could easily step across from the next one. I was unhappy and planned not to return. Be careful checking in, because you get what you pay for. I was going to take pictures and call the manager. Update: I spoke with the manager, and she fixed the situation and thanked us for bringing it to her attention. We appreciate her concern, and I changed my rating.

We have a lovely view from our room, and the pool is pretty too. The room is very clean, looks freshly painted, and has comfortable beds. There are lots of nearby places to eat. I can’t wait to come back when the weather is warmer.

The staff were understanding and accommodating, but the stay itself was awful. The photos make this look like a cute coastal hotel; when we arrived, it seemed like a dump in an alley. The whole place was run down, and the pools had algae and sand caked on the bottom. A pool cleaner came by, but it was still green and dirty afterward. We tried three rooms before settling on one. The first smelled horribly of cat urine and was old and filthy. The second was just as dirty. Its smell was less strong at first, but got worse after we sat inside for a few minutes. The third was in another building and supposedly renovated. It was a little nicer, but still dirty, and the bathtub handle felt like it might come out of the wall. Dust was caked inside the kitchenette cabinets, and there weren’t any pans to use anyway. The walls were filthy, the sink cabinet leaked, and the roof looked like it had leaked. Of the sliding doors, only this room’s worked. The others were so bent we couldn’t open them. The AC, which seemed like a swamp cooler, was badly rusted. The room felt humid and smelled musty. The door didn’t fit properly, leaving cracks you could see through. There was even a huge cockroach in the bathroom. It wasn’t a comfortable stay, and the property was absolutely disgusting.

We love staying here. The rooms are clean and well maintained, it’s affordable and family friendly, and all the staff are friendly. Brenda, the manager, is especially wonderful, warm, and just a great person. We had trouble getting a reservation this year, so we tried another place and regretted it. On Saturday morning we came straight here, and Brenda found us a room within an hour. We’re checking out now after just one night this time, sadly, but we’ve stayed here before and it’s always a great stay. Everything is within walking distance.
