Hyatt Place Chapel Hill / Southern Village

Hyatt Place is about 2.5 miles from the Dean Smith Center, and I'm glad we chose it instead of paying an inflated price for one night closer by. It's one of the cleanest, friendliest hotels we've stayed in, thanks to Shanethia. We've stayed at all kinds of places, including luxury hotels, but some of those couldn't compare with this clean, welcoming Hyatt Place. The bathroom was super clean and the shower was great.

Perfect location, friendly and informative service, a beautiful room, and a clean hotel. Zero bedbugs.

I canceled the second night after seeing bugs in the room. When I switched on the bathroom light, two roaches ran across the floor, and there were several other bugs crawling around. I had to hunt them down and kill them, which was a pretty grim start to the morning. The fitness center was dirty and so hot that I had to prop the door open because the air conditioning was off. We'd asked for a quiet room because my daughter had an early shadow shift at UNC after being offered a registered nurse position. The hotel looked only about 25% full, but they put us beside a group of about eight guests. Around 2:00 AM, they came back, banged on the wrong door for five minutes, then partied for another hour. Earlier, a dog had barked for about 20 minutes, and housekeeping staff spent a long stretch laughing and talking loudly right outside our door. We couldn't sleep after our early flight and 3:00 AM wake-up. We also asked twice for two extra blankets and were told they'd be right up, then in “two minutes,” but they never arrived. After an hour and a half, I went down and stood in line to ask a third time. Given the poor service, noise, and pest issues, I can't recommend this hotel.

From the rear exit on the 3rd floor, there's a bridge and then a short uphill walk, about 4 or 5 blocks, to Southern Village Town Square. There are several good restaurants, a movie theater, a good coffee shop with Gelato in the evening, and a lovely park in the square. We caught a big band concert the night we visited. There's also a park and ride there with buses into Chapple Hill. The hotel itself is a nice, clean mid-range Hyatt Place. The room was clean but a little worn, and the toilet kept running. There was some road noise, though less than you'd expect so close to a street. Breakfast was a standard offering, nothing special.
