Breakfast was a real treat. There were eight teas to pick from, including my favorite chai, and the food was delicious. The croissants were buttery, crisp on the outside and chewy inside. Our waiter was wonderfully warm and polite, put the ladies first, and took care of requests quickly. While we waited for our meal, I noticed a staff member cleaning the draft beer taps. I imagine the beer is good, too. Even the paper towels in the first-floor restroom were incredibly soft! My family and I had a pleasant evening in the living room, listening to music and watching TV from the comfortable chairs. The hotel had a peaceful, beautiful feel, with elegant classic decor and dazzling Christmas decorations. The staff greeted us warmly, especially the woman at reception. My room was smaller and dimmer than a typical hotel room, though I suppose that's understandable in a historic hotel. I appreciated having plenty of spots to charge my iPhone. The hotel is near the University of North Carolina. Valet and self-parking cost the same, and I wish self-parking were a little cheaper.
The staff at The Carolina Inn were incredibly caring, flexible, and accommodating. Their kindness helped make a difficult time easier for us, and my family and I are deeply grateful. We were nearby to visit my 99-year-old grandfather, who was being cared for after a fall, and the hotel's location by the hospital made those trips easy. The shuttle was extremely convenient for getting back and forth. I've traveled to 40+ countries, and this hotel close to home will always stand out as my best hotel experience. Thank you to the whole staff team.
Christmas tea at the nostalgic Carolina Inn is a yearly tradition for my mom and me, and I'm a Carolina alumni. This time the tea room had been moved to a heated tent, but the service was still spectacular. Zach made the visit feel special: attentive without hovering, professional and personable, and he helped keep the tea intimate for those treasured moments with my mom. We left in a much cheerier spirit than when we arrived. Thank you, Zach. I really wanted to share my praise!
At Brunch with Santa on 12/22/2025, our children excitedly went up to Santa and reached out for a high five. He turned his back and walked away without acknowledging them, smiling, or trying to engage. They were confused and heartbroken, and we were left trying to explain it. My husband served in the Navy and deployed multiple times, and the way we were treated felt dismissive and disrespectful. Whether or not it was intentional, the interaction felt discriminatory and left a lasting bad impression. A family holiday event should feel welcoming and include the children. No child should leave a Santa event feeling ignored or unworthy. I hope the organizers take this seriously, improve training and accountability, and make sure other families don't have the same experience. My kids deserve an explanation and an apology from that Santa.
The historic building, charming atmosphere, great location, and killer lobby cookies are all highlights. The rooms are small but nice. But the soundproofing is awful, which is a problem for an older hotel that hosts lots of events. On my most recent stay, I had something important early the next day, while a wedding downstairs was blasting music so loudly it seemed like it would knock the paintings off my wall. I called to ask about moving rooms, and the desk said they were completely sold out. I had him confirm there were no rooms for any reason. Then my company called Carolina to say I'd be switching hotels, and suddenly they were able to find another room out of thin air. I appreciated getting moved, but not being brushed off and told there was nothing available when there clearly was an option. If you can't sleep because someone else's thumping bass is being forced on you, there's no point staying there.
