OYO Hotel Chapmanville Inn, WV - Hwy 119

For what I paid, this room feels like a palace. I'm staying here now and ended up with a new cat in the parking lot thanks to the cat distribution system. The front desk folks were so nice, and they told us about things the locals do and gave us a really helpful magazine about West Virginia. I'd definitely stay again.

We booked online and weren't expecting much for the price. In the room, there were people smoking, mold and mildew, a broken AC, and policies that seemed really sketchy. They wanted to write our credit card details, front and back, by hand. We'd already paid cash, but asked for a refund after seeing the room. A month later, they called at 8:36 PM local time and said they were keeping our money because they considered us a no-show and didn't refund no-shows. I'm done fighting over it, so I'm leaving this review to warn people away from both the hotel and its service. Once its reviews get low enough, they'll probably just rebrand as something else. This is a complete scam. Please stay somewhere else.

We did our best to make a bad stay work, but we learned our lesson: check the reviews. The AC worked somewhat, though we had to use the remote to turn it on. The TV and safe worked fine, too. Everything else was rough. The room smelled, the carpet was in bad shape, mold covered the bathroom, especially the shower ceiling, and water kept dripping from above, possibly from an upstairs bathroom leak. The sink water ran hot, but the shower wasn't even lukewarm. The pillows were so flat they were almost nonexistent, so we folded them to sleep. About ten cockroaches had to be killed. When we entered, the owner picked up a device; when my wife asked about it, he called it a bug trap. We didn't realize it was for cockroaches. The hallway fire alarm outside our room kept beeping and looked like it might fall off the wall, perhaps because it needed a new battery. The building looked nice outside, but our room looked nothing like the posted photos. I don't know where they got those pictures, unless they were from when the building was first built. Our room was 621, on the other side of the hotel, accessed behind a pawnshop. I don't know the inspection laws in West Virginia, but this place really needs to be looked at. I wouldn't recommend staying here, and you couldn't pay us to return.

We decided not to stay as soon as we saw the blinking outside lights, empty parking lot, trashy appearance, and lack of signs. We hadn't even checked in. We'd called looking for a room and were told over the phone there was one left for $100+. The desk clerk was helpful when we went inside, but she had no record of our reservation. I gave her our name and said we wouldn't be staying. The lobby smelled mildewy, and the place looked like a crack house.
