Travelodge By Wyndham Charles Town/Harpers Ferry

We only ended up here because we took a last-minute trip to Charles Town and every other hotel was booked. The toilet in the first room didn't work at all. After they moved us, it would flush only occasionally. A maintenance man came the next day and said it needed a while to refill before it could flush again. With four people in a room, nobody wants to use the toilet after someone else and wait to see if it refills. We kept a trash can full of water in the tub so we could force it to flush. It was broken and really nasty, an unbelievable experience. Don't stay unless you absolutely have to.

I've stayed at the Days Inn Travelodge by Wyndham in Charlestown, WV for about four months, and my experience has been amazing. My stays have been great, and I have no complaints. The staff have always been helpful, and the rooms have been clean. You can't please everyone, and somebody will always find something to fuss about. I've heard of two bedbug complaints during those four months. There's a good chance, maybe even a 100 percent chance, that those two people brought them with them. I'd recommend staying here to family and friends.

The air conditioning kept the room comfortable, and the fridge/freezer and TV worked perfectly. The bathroom was generally clean, though the shower curtain had light stains and the drain took several minutes to empty. The third room smelled clean, but there were small bits of dirt between the sheets, perhaps from them being dropped while handled. The floor hadn't been mopped, and even a minute of walking left my socks or feet noticeably dirty. The first room smelled strongly of cigars and bleach, the floor clearly hadn't been mopped in a long time, and there were visible gaps around the door frame that affected privacy and security. The check-in agent personally looked through several rooms with me and agreed that the third one was the best option based on smell and condition. She was warm, polite, and accommodating. At checkout, the man was dismissive and discourteous when we raised concerns, rolling his eyes and making it clear feedback wasn't welcome. That was disappointing, whether he was staff or the owner. The cleaning and checkout service left a negative impression, and I wouldn't recommend the property.

The toilet flushed once, then never again. We called the front desk, and they said someone would come by while we were out for the day. When we got back, the morning deposit was gone, so we could tell someone had been there, but the room hadn't been cleaned. The toilet flushed once more, then stopped for good. We'll have to keep pouring water from a full garbage can into the bowl until we leave tomorrow. Room 507. Never coming back to a Travel Lodge. We were trying to save a couple of bucks. I wasn't keen on a travel lodge, but the pictures looked renovated and clean, so we gave it a try. The supposed non-smoking room smelled like an ashtray, had an ashtray in it, and there was ash on the bed coverings. We put up with that, and with leftover supper in the fridge and trash behind the bed, which I threw out myself. The bathroom being small was manageable, but a toilet that only works for one flush is ridiculous. Never again.
