American Airlines arranged this room after our flight was delayed, and it wasn’t my choice. We were traveling with a child, had no coats because our luggage was lost, and had expected to be heading home. It was 42° when the front desk told me to wait outside by the “zone one” sign. The airport glass wall was right behind us, so you could see the pickup approach. The room was upstairs and only accessible from outside. The heating system hadn’t been turned on. I set it to 75 degrees, but we were still uncomfortable and cold. We took the extra bedding from the spare bed and used it on the bed we shared. We didn’t bathe because we had no clean clothes, the room wasn’t warm, and we were already cold. By morning, the room still hadn’t warmed up, and there was no hot water. The cold air came in all around the door, and light showed through strongly too, since we were in the front room above the office. The TV playing behind the front desk showed a channel they didn’t offer guests in their rooms. I wanted to be home badly last night, and today I want it a hundred times more. I’m grateful to have heat, dark curtains, efficient windows, hot water, and basic TV channels at home.
The heater was so loud and weak that we shivered all night, even with the thin bedding, during one of the worst cold snaps in years. The room smelled bad, the sink was clogged, and the shower had no hot water. Our flight was delayed, we missed our connection, and we were stuck overnight at Charlotte Airport, so a motel nearby seemed like a good idea. This Red Roof was a terrible choice. As for the “free airport shuttle,” the front desk wouldn’t answer when we tried to request pickup. The first time I called, she told us where to go at the airport. After that she stopped answering and didn’t return my calls. I tried from another phone, and she picked up immediately. Very shady.
The room was filthy, smelled like smoke, and had stained walls. The bathroom door wouldn’t close, and I killed roaches on the floor. Our TV remote didn’t work, and even though I knew four people were at the front desk, they made me walk through the snow late at night to get a replacement. After someone else in our group posted a poor review, Vishal, the lady at the front desk, called our room to say we should have asked for a new room. I’d already explained all the problems to her the night before when I went to get the remote. She was rude, the place was nasty, and I woke up with a sore throat because smoke smell had seeped into the mattresses. We needed a place because of travel delays. It was so bad that Vishal had to write a five-star review for her own hotel. First time at a Red Roof Inn, and the last.
During a snowstorm, with 18 degrees outside, there was no heat in our room. We used the hair dryer under the sheets just to stay warm. There was no hot water either. The key didn’t work, so the clerk let us in with a master key, then said one of us would have to stay in the room the whole time because he wasn’t coming back to unlock it again. The next morning I left to get a rental car. My wife checked out at 11, but they told her to wait outside until I returned and wouldn’t let her sit in the lobby, even though it was well below freezing. I’d give this place negative 1000 stars if I could. It should be shut down and condemned. I’m not even sure it’s really a hotel or a front for something else. I’ll be reporting it to local and state officials. I’ll never book Red Roof again or recommend this place to anyone.
The room was comfortable and clean, the bed was cozy, and the Wi-Fi worked well. Staff were friendly, and parking felt safe. The location was convenient, and everything in the room seemed well maintained. My stay went smoothly, and I’d happily come back or recommend it to anyone passing through.
