Economy 7 Inn - Chesapeake/Portsmouth

I just want my $197 plus the $3-per-day fee back for the two nights. The reservation was made through Hotels.com for Michael Barkley, and I gave the hotel my name, reservation date, and the name it was booked under. Hotels.com says they can't reach the property, while the hotel says it hasn't heard from Hotels.com. I left the key at the window and sought a refund, but neither side has sorted it out. I booked online based on the photos for a friend visiting from out of town, who needed a place near a city where he had business. We live locally. On arrival, children were running around unattended, including behind the first-floor room window, where there was trash that looked like it came from a former homeless encampment. Inside, the room smelled bad and was very dirty; we saw roaches when we turned on the bathroom light. We called the front desk right away and said we wouldn't stay. They agreed and told us to leave the key at the window. It had been less than ten minutes, but nobody was there to take it. We left the key and went. This doesn't feel trustworthy. Our stay was okay, though the rooms need more careful cleaning and upkeep from management and housekeeping. Check the room and tell the office right away if anything is wrong, since there are no refunds. Don't rely on the online photos and information as a sure picture of what you'll find. They're still working on the place.

The AC worked well, and the bathroom was halfway clean, but the shower curtain should be thrown out. Everything else was pretty nasty: floors and covers, dirty mirrors and windows, and cracked glass. The room smelled as if animals had been in it, and the king frame had a queen mattress. A dresser drawer was broken and peeling, the refrigerator barely worked, and the hallways were filthy. Customer service was poor, and people there weren't friendly. No continental breakfast or anything.

The staff member I finally reached was friendly and brought me an extra roll of toilet paper. The air conditioner, refrigerator, and Wi-Fi worked too. But my cousin's three-night stay was awful. Half the rear parking lot was blocked with tires, for reasons I still don't understand, and there was a .380-caliber bullet hole in the tempered glass of the rear entrance door. Staff were away from the front desk about 80% of the time, making even a simple request for soap or toilet paper a huge hassle. The hallway carpet wasn't vacuumed during his stay, and the room carpet was worse, with spots that looked like melted candle wax or chewed candy spat into it. Bugs seemed to infest the whole building. His room had no working landline phone, so we called the front desk from a cell. He was assigned a smoking room, and their solution was to remove the smoke detector altogether. I'm pretty sure that violates fire code. The sheets looked filthy or stained. In my opinion, the motel badly needs attentive management to put hygiene and safety first and overhaul the place. Right now it feels like they do the bare minimum. This is far from acceptable.
