The late checkout option was frustrating. I checked out at 11:45 a.m. and asked to stay until 1:30 p.m., which would have cost another $91. With nowhere comfortable in the lobby to sit, work, or relax before a flight, that felt especially disappointing. The lobby itself isn’t really a proper lobby, since check-in and the bar share the same space. I booked a Suite at Ivy Hotel Chicago for my friend’s birthday and arranged the special service before landing. A bottle of prosecco was quoted at $45 and room decor at $35, but what they set up felt underwhelming and poorly thought out. Artificial rose petals were scattered on the bed in a way that seemed romantic rather than celebratory. A simple “Happy Birthday” in petals would’ve made more sense. There were only two artificial candles and a personal bottle of prosecco, which wasn’t worth the charge. The Suite was basically clean, but there was quite a bit of dust on the furniture, which isn’t acceptable for that room level. The hot water was another issue. In the morning it barely got warm, and only became properly hot late in the evening. Basic amenities were missing too: no microwave, robe, or complimentary water bottle for making tea. Other Suites I’ve stayed in usually include those things. Our flight was delayed seven hours, so we got there around 3:00 a.m. and saw two men enter with a young woman who was so intoxicated she could barely walk. The receptionist said the men hadn’t come with her and she probably didn’t belong at the hotel, but did nothing to step in or speak to them. One of them yelled, “NOTHING TO SEE HERE,” before getting in the elevator. I felt unsafe after that and uncomfortable for the rest of the stay. All those extra costs, missing basics, poor service, and safety concerns left me very disappointed. Ivy Hotel Chicago didn’t meet what I expected from a Suite, and I wouldn’t stay again.

We chose the Elevated Queen suite because the website listed a large soaking tub, separate shower, plush bathrobe and slippers, nightly cocktail and dessert, and high thread count Egyptian sheets. The only listed item we actually found was the shower. There was no tub or any of the other promised amenities. The front desk said those rooms never had tubs, that cocktails and dessert were no longer offered because the kitchen was gone, and that he couldn’t get us robes because he couldn’t access housekeeping. He gave us the manager’s card. The manager responded promptly when we raised it and reduced the room price, then got us the nightly cocktail and a robe. So some amenities were available once we complained. We’d chosen this hotel over others for a specific feature and paid more for the elevated room because it was advertised with that feature. It’s not acceptable to list selling points and then not provide them. Be careful when booking. This felt like bait and switch.

Parking was the main inconvenience. You have to pay for street parking or use a nearby garage, and it’s relatively expensive. The rest of the stay was very pleasant at this four-star hotel in downtown Chicago. Its modern, distinctive style, warm lobby, and complimentary hot chocolate made a nice impression, and the front desk staff were friendly and helpful. Even the elevator walls have a unique design. The room felt clean, cozy, and modern, with good equipment. The multifunction shower had strong water pressure and was very satisfying. Overall, I’d recommend the hotel.

The room had everything we needed for a comfortable stay, including a little Keurig, blackout curtains, and plenty of cabinet space for food. There’s no fridge or microwave, though there is a minibar. The Ontario Suite was gorgeous, roomy, and felt luxurious, with a lovely soaking tub and rainfall shower. No pool or hot tub, but the tub in the room was a treat. Housekeeping was great, and there were plenty of places to eat, shop, and sightsee within a decent walk. The photos matched what we got, and we had a marvelous stay.

We’ll definitely stay here again. The staff were so friendly, greeting us with a good morning and good evening, little courtesies you don’t hear much these days. Our room was clean and spacious, and the hotel is close to shopping and sightseeing. O’Tools, a wonderful pub right on the corner, had great food and drinks too.
