Kimpton Gray Hotel by IHG

The staff were willing to do whatever they could to accommodate us and our pet, and the breakfast was really good. We also had free welcome amenities and waters. There’s plenty to see and do nearby, with many attractions within walking distance. If you’re staying briefly and would rather not go out, Boleo and the Italian restaurant are both good options. The building and decor are beautiful. For parking, we used SpotHero and left the car on Wells street, a few blocks away. It cost $63 for the weekend, with no in-and-out privileges.

The breakfast at Trattoria was the highlight: the food was delicious and everyone there was wonderful. The common areas were beautiful, and I had a great time at the Kimpton Happy Hour. I’d stay here again, but I’d be more careful about which room I book. This could be a fantastic property again with some upkeep. My room was shabby and a little run down. Paint was peeling on the closet door, the shower handle was rusty, the trash and recycling bins looked tattered and gross, and the chair was threadbare. The bedside lamp flickered when switched on or off, a TV pixel was dead, and the room dimmed whenever the HVAC started. There was no lotion, which was miserable in the dry Chicago air, so I had to go buy some. The other bath products were fine. I booked a King Premium With Walk In Shower and was told I’d been upgraded, but the only noticeable difference was a higher floor facing the street. I expected at least a soaking tub with the FHR or Platinum Elite upgrade. Check-in at the desk was adequate. I booked the AMEX FHR rate and have IHG Platinum Elite status; they recognized my status, but the young woman checking me in didn’t explain the FHR benefits. I had to go back downstairs after reaching my room to get the standard benefits sheet. Most staff were friendly and upbeat, though the valet and front-door staff seemed like they hated life and didn’t want to be there. It was unbearably cold, and they never opened a door or offered to help with my bags.

We were in town for a performance at the Lyric Opera, and the hotel was convenient for just about anywhere in the Loop. The room was large and comfortable, and the gym was well equipped. There are cozy lounge spaces too, including happy hour. Every staff member we spoke with was so warm and welcoming. We had a wonderful Valentine's Day stay at the Kimpton.

The staff were friendly and helpful, and the location was convenient. There’s a Starbucks on level 1, handy if you’re a Starbucks person. Our room was spacious and had enough charging points. Breakfast was delicious, with a range of set menus that even suited my fussy daughter, and free coffee refills. The extra I loved was happy hour on level 1, from 3 to 6 pm. A lovely woman served free chardonnay and merlot, and we could take a glass up to our room. I don’t see other hotels doing that; it felt unique and generous. I’d definitely recommend Kimpton hotels, and this one will be our choice when we travel to places where they have one.
