The shower over the bathtub felt cramped and uncomfortable, and water ended up all over the bathroom. The gym is there in name, but nobody in our group could really use it properly. Closet space was tight too. The minibar wasn’t working, and I only discovered that after leaving food in it overnight, so I lost the food. There were plenty of good things: the location was convenient, the room clean, and the bed great. Heating and AC both worked perfectly, housekeeping was on point, staff were attentive, and the food was good. These issues add up, but fix them and this place could easily earn a five.

The rooms and bathrooms were tiny, and there’s no laundromat close by. Wi-Fi was terrible, so I couldn’t even watch YouTube. They want you to pay $12 a day for faster Wi-Fi, and coffee is only available before 10 a.m. There isn’t all-day coffee. On the plus side, housekeeping was great every day, employees provided great service, and the location was fantastic. The lobby and architecture were lovely. There’s afternoon tea from 2-4 with scones and tea, and being in the theater district near the water means there’s lots to do. All in all, I was satisfied.

The young woman who checked me in was sweet, and the staff were nice. Still, I wish the hotel would update its website and spell out the costs and details. I booked through a third-party site that didn’t mention the $100 per night incidental fee, charged upfront and returned later, or the $10 nightly credit for spending at the hotel. It also didn’t say there was no room service. Searching online for room service at this hotel brings up two options, and they’re a bit costly. I’m here for the weekend on a little staycation, hoping to clear my head, but I had no idea it would cost me $500. The booking itself was only $312, paid when I reserved, and the extra costs put a damper on my chance to relax. I’d also seen something saying face masks, chocolates, bath salts, and other items were included free in the rooms. Where are they? If they aren’t already in the room, staff don’t mention them. You also need your keycard to use the elevator. It’s downtown, but $500 for this feels like a lot when the Hyatt or Hilton cost less for bigger spaces and more amenities. I may not come back after this weekend. Hopefully I can still make the getaway enjoyable once I figure out how.

Dru made our mother-daughter visit feel so special. A bottle of wine and a delicious platter showed up at our door as a surprise, such a generous, thoughtful welcome. We were in downtown Chicago for the first time to see Phantom of the Opera, and the Allegro Royal Sonesta was a charming, comfortable base in a great spot for exploring the busy city. We're already planning to come back in May for the Bruno Mars concert, and we'll stay here again. Thanks, Dru and Allegro Royal Sonesta, for a memorable trip!

We first happened upon Allegro one evening downtown and decided to return, this time for a quick drink with my husband. The beautiful, stylish hotel has a lot of character, and the service really stood out. Everyone we met, from security and the front desk to the restaurant team, was warm, attentive, and welcoming. You can tell they care about giving guests a good experience. We were impressed and will be back. Definitely worth stopping in, even just for a drink.
