Blue Dragonfly Inn

Just minutes from philmont, with clean rooms and warm hospitality. Breakfast was tasty, and everyone sat down together, which made for some interesting conversation.

Erin puts a lot of care into the cooking. She takes people’s health needs into account and has snacks and food options for them, so there’s plenty to eat and something a little different to try. We always enjoy the pool and hot tub at the Blue Dragonfly after hiking or sitting outside looking at the mountain views. My daughter and I have been here twice, and we love the escape from everyday life. It’s quiet and relaxing, and Erin and Colin keep the place clean and welcoming. They live here too, which gives it a homey feel. They’re considerate, down-to-earth innkeepers. The hiking, fishing, trail head, sking, and historical significance of the town are another draw for me. I also like coming to experience the ghosts and their long history here. We’ll be back!

We had amazing breakfasts. My favorites were the New Mexican Eggs Benedict, or at least I think that’s what it was called, and the salmon crepes. The hosts are friendly, fun to talk with, and know the area well. The Blue Dragonfly is tucked into the small town of Cimarron. It’s a good place to get away, while still being close enough to visit Red River, Eagles Nest, Angel Fire, and other towns in the Enchanted Circle. The mountain views are beautiful, and the wildlife that turns up almost every day is fascinating to watch. The inn has four rooms, a pool, hot tub, back deck, TVs in the rooms, fresh fruit snacks, and those great breakfasts. We never turned on the TVs because we’d rather enjoy the scenery and talk with the hosts. We explored the area, hiked in the mountains, and took the town walking tour. The area has quite a fascinating past. We’ll definitely return.

The innkeepers are cyclists themselves, so after doing some of our own research, we took their suggestions and rode trails in Carson National Forest. The trail head was less than an hour away, and it was some of the best riding I’ve ever done. We saw nearly every “western” animal you’d hope for in a Rocky Mountain national forest: deer, prairies dogs, antelope, bear, trout, mule deer, and wild turkeys. One day we rode valley cross-country trails, and the next we climbed a great switchback that led to a fast downhill with berms and amazing views. Even over Labor Day weekend, with perfect weather, we didn’t see another group on the trails. My legs were sore the next day, but it was a perfect trip. My wife and I used Blue Dragonfly Inn as our base for a long weekend of mountain biking in New Mexico. The place felt bigger than it looked in the photos. By the indoor pool there was a fridge for keeping our beer cold, and enough room to bring in our bikes and gear overnight. Our rooms were clean and spacious. Ours was apart from the hosts and other guest rooms, with a bathroom between us and the next room. Nights were so quiet that we turned on the fan for some noise. In the morning, deer and wild turkeys were on the lawn outside the picture window facing the mountains. We had coffee in the dining area, walked to the edge of town and down a few blocks to what counts as the main road, then checked out Philmont Scout ranch, a few miles away, before heading to ride. We had to leave Monday after doing “only” some of the best mountain biking of my life. The inn’s pamphlets and local information have us planning a return for more riding and other nearby activities.
