Royal Inn Claremont

I’ve been here a few times, and it’s handy for the downtown area. The rooms are basic and sparse, but clean and comfortable. The manager is friendly and helpful. It’s a decent place to stay in Claremont if you want something simple and aren’t after anything fancy.

A clean bathroom or room doesn’t seem to be a thing here, and there are rats and bugs. They claim to do housekeeping, but they don’t. If you clean your own room, they charge over $200; if a previous guest breaks something and you report it, they blame you and add another fee. Don’t stay here. You’d be better off on the street for the time.

The room smelled horrendous, and the beds felt like cardboard under dirty sheets. We found multiple bugs in the room and bed, and after getting home we spent another 25 dollars at a laundromat washing all our things so we wouldn’t bring them home. The owner couldn’t pay me to stay there again. We came for a family graduation party in NH, arriving around midnight after a 6.5 hour drive. A grumpy clerk checked us in, then another man joined him and demanded an extra 80 dollars. First he said it was because our 2 kids weren’t on the reservation, though they were. We’d booked 2 beds so our daughters could share one and my wife and I the other. Then he called it a smokers fee, and when I said we don’t smoke, he said it was for 2 kids plus smoking. We refused to pay those charges. We barely slept. The next morning I went to McDonald's for coffee and a sandwich for the girls because the hotel offers nothing. While I was gone, my wife called to say they’d banged on the door and tried to come in at 9am, asking us to check out. We wanted out of that nightmare anyway. We’d left the room spotless and made the bed, but were charged over 240 dollars for one night, including 140 dollars extra. I’d look elsewhere or sleep in my vehicle before giving this place business again.

I needed somewhere warm and safe while getting on my feet as a traveling nurse, and it served that purpose. But the room isn’t worth the price. I had a mouse running around, no shower curtain, and had to use my own. The owners seem jaded by bad guests and assume everyone is trouble. I was accused of smoking when I hadn’t, and cooking good-smelling food in their microwave got me accused of using some other cooking device. The place has potential, but needs a major remodel. I wouldn’t pay to stay there.
