The farm was lovely, and I especially liked visiting the goats on the hill and how quiet it got after sunset. Angela was really friendly, and the loft was clean and roomy with a very comfortable bed. I booked the barn loft while passing through because I wanted somewhere unusual to stay, and it was just right. Even the outhouse was well cared for and odor-free, while still feeling rustic and historic. One thing to know: the loft runs a little warm, so if you prefer sleeping somewhere chilly, one of the farm's other two spaces might suit you better. It has a glamping feel. I’d also consider booking in the cooler months for a unique stay. I’ll definitely come back.

The farm has a few pleasant walking trails, and it’s well placed for getting out to explore. A grocery store is about 15 minutes away, Clendenin around 10, and Charleston about 30. The Elk River is nearby for fishing, with the Elk River Trail for an easy bike ride or walk. We also reached several hiking trails and the New River Gorge Bridge in about an hour. We stayed in the barn loft, and my worries about it feeling spooky faded quickly. I’ve slept in old barns from the 1800s and 1900s before, and those stays felt eerie, but this one was peaceful and quiet. The sunset was lovely, the stars were beautiful, and watching the little brown bats fly overhead was a treat. There were only a few mosquitoes. The ducks and chickens at night were comforting, and I soon got used to the rooster waking us early. Breakfast was phenomenal and worth every penny. I enjoyed hearing about the farm’s history and getting to know John and Angela. I’d recommend the stay for the experience and hospitality.

We had no bad smells during our stay, and didn’t see any creatures in the room, as far as we knew. No one mentioned a snake to us, but it’s realistic to expect snakes and other wildlife to share the property. The grass smelled fresh, the berries were juicy, and coffee and bacon had that familiar breakfast-at-home smell. We really enjoyed the Cellar House and would gladly stay longer next time. The place felt rustic in a comfortable way. The bed is firm, though there are lots of soft pillows, and there’s a fridge and a big country table for the breakfast delivered to your room in the morning. We enjoyed a sit-down bath with the bathroom window propped open using the provided stick, letting in the country breeze while we relaxed with a glass of wine. After breakfast, you can walk to the strawberry patch and pick berries, then visit the chickens, ducks, and the adorable, talkative goat up the hill. Thanks, Angela and John, for a lovely stay on your little homestead.

We had room to spread out, unlike in a crowded hotel, and got to spend one night stargazing and playing a few games of uno. We weren’t at the house much during the day, but Angela’s breakfasts kept us energized, and the kids loved opening the chicken coop each morning. My family of five stayed for a couple of days while checking out local cryptid legends. Angela told us that one of the first Mothman reports was in Cledindin Cemetery. From there, downtown Charleston was under an hour away, and Sutton, with the Flatwood and Bigfoot Museums, was about an hour away. Thanks, Angela and John, for being part of the memories we’ll take home from this vacation.

We loved the quiet, clean, private stay, and everyone we met, including Angela, made it worthwhile, even though we slept in a hay loft. The breakfast was amazing, and since I love history, hearing about the place was great. It’s an old country house with plenty of history, so don’t expect everything to be brand new. We had a magnificent visit and will see you all next trip.
