Howard Johnson Express Inn - Colorado Springs

The rooms were much nicer than the place looked from outside. Mine was updated, clean, and smelled nice, with no bugs or pests at all. I booked online for the first time and extended an extra night without trouble. I like quiet, safety, and being left alone, and it was peaceful with no drama or smoke smell. I chose a non-smoking room and got exactly that, even though they do have smoking rooms. I felt safe enough staying alone as a young woman, and with my child. The front desk man was very direct and could be friendlier, but once he got a feel for me he was respectful and helpful. Breakfast was disappointing: I expected more, like cereal and fruit, but only coffee and juice were available. I'd hoped for an actual breakfast, especially since online prices differ depending on whether breakfast is included. I stayed in winter, so I can't speak to the pool, though there is one. I didn't need the laundry facilities, so can't comment on those either. The price and deposit were affordable, and it's walkable to dining, fast food, and convenience stores. Just don't walk alone at night if you're by yourself or unfamiliar with the area, given the homeless people and suspected drug seekers and the shelter nearby. For a budget stay, it was decent, with working A/C, a basic TV, a fairly comfortable bed, and a microwave and mini fridge. Late checkout was a perk. The area felt sketchy, with many homeless people and possible hookers, so I wouldn't bring kids or recommend it to families. I never used the small-looking pool. During the stay, the room keys stopped working. There were small stains on bedding and towels that were supposed to be clean and new, and the bathroom door wouldn't close all the way, which could be awkward with multiple people. It's a low-cost option, but there are risks.

The beds were fine, but I found hair in the shower and drain and the towels were stained. With shady people hanging around outside all night, I was honestly relieved my car hadn't been stolen by morning. There are a dozen other hotels in Springs for about the same price, so I'd go somewhere else.

The breakfast they called complimentary was just Pop-tarts and Rice Krispies treats. At night, homeless people knocked on doors and walked through the lot and along the street, and I saw a drug deal in the parking lot. The doors wouldn't shut all the way, some outlets had to be rigged to work, and the thermostat was just a mount with wires.
