The Westin Great Southern Columbus

Colin was really professional and super accommodating. I stayed here with my company recently and ran into a problem with my room, so I went downstairs to ask for the manager. Colin listened with sympathy and understanding, made some changes, and the experience immediately improved. The Great Southern is lucky to have someone so good at hospitality and customer service. The room key didn’t work, the tub wouldn’t drain, and the room AC was broken. Hallway carpets were stained, and the downtown location isn’t a good one. This hotel doesn’t live up to the Westin name. I’d pass.

The lobby was charming and beautiful, and the bar felt welcoming. Its typical menu had delicious food. Our suite was small and a little dated, but it was accommodating. I knew this was an old historic hotel, so I wasn’t expecting a modern, spacious room, though it could use some freshening up. Housekeeping needs better supervision. On the second day, there was no cream rinse, just one tiny bottle of lotion, and no replacement coffee cups. I could live with those things and went to the lobby for help. What bothered me was the night clerk’s response, excuse after excuse when all I wanted was to let her know what was going on. Not good!

The entrance and lobby look beautiful and even smell nice, but the rooms feel like a different hotel. I stay at a lot of Westins, and this one felt more like a Fairfield. Most of the problems seem tied to the building’s age and may be outside management’s control, though at this price I’m surprised Marriott doesn’t put an age limit on Westin branded properties. During my stay I found soiled mattresses, smelled mold in the carpet, and was kept awake by a loud heating unit each time it started. Someone scanned a key, opened my door without knocking, then swiped again and shoved hard against the door when the latch stopped it. It sounded like the door might break, which was alarming. Most staff were pleasant, but the building is too old to feel as relaxing as the Westins I’m used to.
