Canvas Hotel Dallas

The rooftop bar was a relaxing place to sit, and the view was great. I slept so well in the comfy bed that getting up the next day was tough. The staff were very friendly and helpful, and the area seemed fine, with the police department across the street. I'd stay again. A couple of things to know: street noise can be bothersome at times, and with the concrete floors, footsteps from boots or heels and chairs being dragged carry through to the floor below. Self-parking is very limited, so we had to valet one night. Our car sits low, and parking partly off the road wasn't an option without risking damage.

The staff were great, let me check in early, and were very helpful. I liked the theme and vibe, and the rooftop looked like it could be a fun place in summer. The sheets seemed fine, too. Cleanliness needs work. The rug was very dirty, with what looked like bodily fluid and other grime, and the pink lamp was stained and looked like it had been wet and left to dry with mold. The floors seemed unclean because my feet turned black after I showered. Noise was another issue, with little insulation. I heard they offer free earplugs and a machine to help drown it out.

The hotel itself was lovely, with cozy decor, clean rooms, tall ceilings, and brick walls that gave it a New York loft look. The downstairs bar was much better, which made the rooftop experience especially disappointing. The downtown Dallas view is gorgeous, but the drinks didn't match it. They came in clear plastic cups, and my whiskey sour tasted like whiskey and sour mix. There was no garnish or presentation, and it hadn't even been shaken. I expected a real glass and a properly made drink at a rooftop bar. Our bartender, Courtney T.T. (redhead), was curt and unwelcoming, as though serving guests was beneath her. It felt like we were a burden. On top of that, the bill automatically includes a mandatory 20% tip, so guests have to reward service like that. Management needs to address the rooftop service, which is spoiling an otherwise nice hotel stay.

I thought the price was reasonable compared with similar boutique hotels in downtown Dallas, given the rooms, amenities, and overall experience. The rooftop was a highlight, with poolside lounge vibes, skyline views, and food and drinks right there, so it was easy to stay in for the evening. My room at the Canvas Hotel had a roomy loft layout, exposed brick, and eclectic decor that felt more like a cool city apartment than an ordinary hotel room. Staff were helpful and friendly throughout, from check-in to the bar and restaurant. I'd happily return. For me, it was 4.5 out of 5 stars.
