My son and I ended up sleeping outside that night in the cold, with no money, working phones, or somewhere else to go. I’d booked through a third-party vendor for my son’s 14th birthday. He’s autistic and loves swimming, and after a rough year I wanted to do something special. The hotel has an indoor pool. Before booking, I called to check the deposit and was told $50. The room was already paid for, and I’d spent $72 to get there. When we arrived, signs said the deposit was $100 and guests weren’t allowed in your room. The desk agent said he’d been there a while and hadn’t quoted $50 over the phone. I asked for some time because I’d spent what I had on the room and Uber, and we had two carts of belongings while moving things between storage and our new place. A little over an hour later, the desk person spoke rudely to me and said he’d honor a refund, but we had to leave the lobby and go outside. My friend, my son, and I waited outside in 30-degree weather without a way to charge our phones. I couldn’t get any money before my phone died. I tried using my son’s phone to find a solution because I had nowhere else to go, and I just wanted him to swim on his birthday. We also had all our belongings with us and couldn’t move them.
