The rooms are pretty basic, and you’ll need to drive somewhere for food, but that fits the place. There’s so much character here. I spent three nights and had a lovely time. Take a tour if you can, it really helps you appreciate how historic and magical the place is.

The staff were genuinely warm, and I loved seeing the opera house on the tour. It’s a fascinating piece of Death Valley history. But I had a miserable time in the hotel itself, and I don’t think it’s safe or fit for people to stay in. The carpets were caked with mud, and after recent flash flooding the hallway carpets smelled of mildew and mold. That was on top of a strong raw sewage odor in the main areas and halls. Our room seemed okay the first night, maybe because a huge air freshener was plugged into one of the room’s few outlets. The second night, sewage smell came up through the bathroom drains. We stuffed towels over them to make it bearable, but left before sunrise the next morning. I couldn’t take another minute there. The walls were cracked and peeling, dust was caked into the curtains, and there was a spider in our bed. The smoke alarm had been removed from our room. We didn’t take off our shoes or socks anywhere, even inside the room, and it was hard to sleep in those unsanitary conditions. I’m fine with an old place that doesn’t have a TV or phone, but this was filthy, moldy, falling apart, and seemingly not up to code. At $145 a night, I never felt comfortable and worried about my health. The staff weren’t the problem at all. It’s a shame, because the history is so interesting. Pay for an opera house tour if you want, but stay at the casino up the street instead. I’d skip this hotel.

This place is basically a ghost town 😅 Every building except this one was abandoned and totally empty. I didn’t stay here, though SOME rooms are available. I absolutely love the history of the whole place. It’s a really cool stop if you’re exploring abandoned spots out in the countryside 👌

I came for a Valentine's Day opera show, not to stay at the hotel. The performance was worth the admission, honestly, they could’ve charged more. Marta Becket was an amazing artist, and her work is displayed throughout the property. Take the tour, too. If you’re anywhere near Death valley, this place is worth the detour.

The place is old, but it’s got such a charming vibe, and the rooms were clean. We all loved it, my boys included. The opera house was beautiful. Take the tour, it’s worth it to learn about Marta. Go see it, and put your money toward this place!
