Breakfast was my favorite part. I could bring my coffee and food into the sunroom and watch the chickens peck through fallen apples in the yard. The property was beautiful and so peaceful, and the evening communal dinners were a delicious way to meet the other guests. I stayed a few nights while exploring the Steens and loved this historic hotel. Everything was clean and cozy. My upstairs room had a window AC unit that kept it cool in the summer, and the memory foam bed was really comfortable. The second-floor rooms share two bathrooms between six rooms, and both were clean and well stocked. I’d happily come back if I’m in the area again.

A great base for riding the BDRx or exploring the area. Hotel Diamond feels like a hidden gem, with clean, nice rooms, helpful staff, and a delicious dinner.

We ended up staying four nights at this wonderful family-run historic hotel. It’s a lovely community, and we met several members of the family during our visit. They gave us five-star service and went above and beyond. The owners serve dinner, and both the food and the experience are worth catching. The hotel is also well placed for visiting the Steens Mountains, Malhuer Wildlife Refuge, Diamond Crater, and other nearby spots.

Room #7 was at the back on the ground floor, with its own bathroom and a lovely sunset view. We enjoyed watching the chickens wander around, and they even helped clear some bugs off our car grill. Breakfast was included and available from 7-10, with homemade treats, egg casserole to heat up, cereal, and the usual drinks. We spent a few nights at Hotel Diamond toward the end of our time at Malheur National Wildlife Refuge. It’s been a hotel in one form or another since 1898. The place isn’t glamorous, but it’s comfortable and full of charm. It’s seasonal, open April-October, and a good fit for birding trips to the Refuge. Be sure to reserve dinner each night. There aren’t any restaurants within 30-50 miles, and the family-style meal is all you can eat for a set price, with an extra fee. David cooked for us each night, and the food was excellent and plentiful. Leave room for dessert. We met fellow travelers and birdwatchers from Portland, Bend, and the Banks area. The owners, David and his sister Gretchen, are part of one of the area’s first families, the Thompson family, and cattle ranchers with their own family ranches. I enjoyed talking with David and his wife Ramonda about the hotel, ranching, and the area. It was a wonderful find for us city folks on an eastern Oregon road trip.

A solid, rustic hotel in a farming community, and we plan to return. Dinner is good, and the family-style tables make it easy to hear about what other guests have been doing nearby. We even adjusted our plans one day based on a dinner conversation. Next time, we may book the suite for its better view. I just hope there aren’t too many bugs when we sit outside.
