We booked this stay for the pool and water slide, and that was a huge disappointment. The slide was shut down for half the day every day. The hot tub was roped off, and the pool was dirty, with dirt all over the bottom. The water was freezing, including the kiddie pool, which was even colder. Five other adults checked the temperature too, and nobody could stand it or wanted to stay in the pool area. The kids caught colds after trying to swim, and it ruined our day. Staff said the chemicals meant they couldn’t make the water warmer, which I find hard to believe. The front desk staff were unfriendly, unhelpful, and straight rude when I asked about amenities. Our room was dirty when we arrived, and several things were in rough shape. My daughter cut her foot on the bathroom tile, where grout was missing and there were divots in the floor. We also had hockey boys, all minors without their parents supervising them, in rooms around us. They slammed doors and played ding dong ditch all night. The hotel tried to reach their parents but couldn’t. After three hours of sleepless hell, I worked up the energy and confidence to deal with it myself. I got nowhere with the boys, so I went to the front desk and made them get the parents, who were downstairs. The parents were just as rude, if not worse. It’s sad when people can’t be respectful and kind, and when hotels mislead guests with photos and amenities and don’t take care of them.

The pool and hot tub were being worked on, and we hadn’t been told in advance. We chose this hotel specifically for those, and probably would have booked elsewhere if we’d known they couldn’t be used. There were many cheaper hotels nearby without a pool or hot tub, so I think a discount was warranted. The rest was good: the hotel was very clean and nice, the staff were friendly to pets, breakfast was very good, and there’s a fitness center with treadmills.

The hot tub was amazing, though it overflowed way too much. The pool was smaller than I expected, and the kiddy pool was okay. The water slide only runs after 4 pm. Our multibed studio room was nice, the hallways were quiet, and breakfast was good. Some rowdy guests caused trouble, so staff had to kick families out of the pool area, and there was constant damage. Staff did their best to monitor things, but on our weeklong stay my kids couldn’t enjoy the pool much.

We’ll definitely come back. Country Inn & Suites Hermantown was a pleasant getaway, about 10 minutes from the Canal Park area of Duluth, which is a must. The pool area was a highlight for relaxing and having fun with family. Breakfast was a large continental spread with fresh fruit, pastries, eggs, and coffee, and it got each day off to a good start. Rooms felt fresh and comfortable, were clean and well kept, and the staff were friendly, helpful, and happy to answer questions.

This is my fourth stay, and I keep coming back because it’s enjoyable enough. Nothing fancy, but it’s comfortable and the service is good when you need it. Breakfast is decent, with the usual scrambled egg mix and sausage one day, then biscuits and gravy the next. It’s just off a main road and next to an Outback.
