The chicken dish was a hit with our group, and we also shared Brussels sprouts, escargot, arugula salad, cod en papillote, and steak. Everything tasted good, though the cod servings were noticeably smaller than the other meals. The two people who ordered it wound up finishing some of the chicken and steak too. We wrapped up with an apple turnover and profiteroles. The profiteroles were plenty for two, while the turnovers were small but tasty. We’d just come from a holiday matinee at the Ivoryton Playhouse, and dinner at the inn was a lovely way to extend the outing. The decor was beautiful and tasteful, and Andrew, our server, was personable and knew the menu well even though he was new. We’d recommend the Copper Beech and hope to return.

The place looks elegant, but that was about all it had going for it. The food was overpriced and not worth talking about. My wife’s lamb was overcooked and chewy, and it took ages for the hostess, who was also our server, to come explain what had gone wrong. She didn’t come back after serving the food to check on us, and she wasn’t warm or friendly. There seemed to be virtually no staff beyond her. We also spoke with another couple who had eaten there, and they felt the same way about the food and service. We won’t be back. People would be better off eating somewhere else.

I wrote to the inn on Oct 13, 2025, about our Oct. 9-12 stay. We came hoping to relax and didn’t sleep for any of the three nights. The mattress felt like the cheapest possible KS mattress, and the big, thick pillows couldn’t be adjusted to suit how we sleep. The couch seemed like a garage-sale purchase. Once seated, it was hard to get back up, and the large desk served no purpose. The 31” 480 standard TV had erratic, poor reception and couldn’t be watched from that awful couch. What really alarmed me was that there was no room safe, and housekeeping left our door unlocked two days in a row. I told the desk clerk, but it seemed to go nowhere. The rate was high for a place with no amenities. If you’re after a restful, romantic few days, I’d cross this place off the list.

This is probably the worst place I’ve ever stayed. It’s old, smelly, and poorly kept, and I could barely find any staff, if there were staff at all. The restaurant wasn’t much better. The price they ask for a run-down place like this is nuts. I’ll never visit again.

We stayed in room 301, which is the second largest, and found it really cozy. The place was pristine, and Krista and her staff were great. Breakfast comes with the stay, and the restaurant food was spot on. Essex town is nearby, with plenty of other restaurants around too. It’s a lovely spot for a romantic break or simply to unwind. We’ll be back for sure.
