The food at the restaurant was excellent, and the entertainment in the Tavern was amazing. Essex is also a fun place to walk around, with shops to pop in and out of and lots of history. But the suite listing was misleading. The website says suites have claw-foot tubs, though only some do, and it doesn’t say which ones. That tub was the reason I booked, so I paid $400 for one night for a “suite” that didn’t feel like one. I emailed afterward asking for pictures of my specific room to put in a birthday card because it was a gift, and they told me to look at the website. The whole thing felt very scammy, and I won’t stay here again. Also, the champagne glasses I requested weren’t clean. One had lipstick on it. We washed them and used them, but I was shocked at a place that seemed so reputable. There are no TVs in the rooms, which didn’t bother us because we don’t watch much, but could be an issue for people traveling with kids.

The main dining room has a nice atmosphere, with pictures of boats and a fireplace. I’ve been many times, and it’s always good. This visit, the potato pancakes came out hot and tasty. My daughter’s Cobb salad and my steak Caesar salad were both very good, and we had a nice seat near the fireplace.

The food was average at best, and I’m being kind. The wait for our reserved table was half an hour, with about 100 people packed together despite the two-hour seating slots. We got a random table, either in the atmospheric grill room near the buffet or in a brightly lit new addition, a three-room walk from the food. Once seated, the staff left us to figure things out. It took 20 minutes to get someone’s attention for water and drink orders, and nobody welcomed us or explained the buffet. When we asked a frantic staff member how it worked, all she said was to get food in the other room. Thanksgiving at the iconic Griswold Inn was supposed to feel comforting, maybe like New England Pilgrim charm, but the whole evening was a mess and a real turkey. Very disappointing.

For 40 friends and family, Claudia and her team put together a perfect 70th birthday celebration in the Covered Bridge room. Their attention to detail was great, and the food and service were excellent. They were flexible even with the snowstorm. I can’t imagine a better experience. Highly recommend them for an important event or occasion.

My wife and I didn’t stay at this classic inn and tavern, but we had an amazing meal there. The homemade chips with cheese dip were awesome, and the seasonal Pilgrim sandwich was just right. The food was traditional homemade American fare, done well, and the decor was great, with old American relics on display. The vibe was amazing too. I’d totally come back!
