We used this as a budget overnight stop for a weekend of skiing at Breckenridge. The rooms were nice, the staff pleasant, and breakfast at the cafe was delicious. The old hotel is well kept and has a charming boutique feel. It's about a 30-minute drive to Breckenridge and less than an hour to Keystone, with prices that can't be beat compared with the resorts. Great for skiers driving in from out of town.

We found the gift shop and restaurant had more reasonable prices than anywhere nearby, and the food was good. Even if you're not staying overnight, it's a worthwhile stop for any age or group. The Hand Hotel sits off Front Street in Fairplay, Colorado, with unmatched Rocky Mountain views. Inside, the boutique spaces feel cozy and welcoming, and everyone we met, from guest services to local people, was friendly and helpful. It has a brilliant mix of today and yesterday.

The beds were very comfortable, and the place has a cool, historic feel. The location is its biggest plus. Still, our group's stay was frustrating. We had seven rooms, and during heavy rain one developed a serious roof leak right over the bed. The hotel was full, so two people in our group shared a room for two nights to give the displaced guest somewhere usable. The leaking room itself couldn't be used. We also had a hard time reaching anyone. The owner says the phones are staffed from 9am-7pm, but I tried repeatedly during and after our stay and often the line wouldn't ring or connect. Emails went unanswered as well. It was difficult to sort things out while we were there, and nearly impossible to follow up on billing questions afterward. The property is quaint and well located, but the experience left us unsure about staying again. Thanks for responding. I appreciate the apology, and I understand that a roof leak in a storm is challenging, especially with a full hotel. My colleagues were flexible, but their sharing a room shouldn't be treated as the resolution. I'm still concerned about the communication problems and hope they get fixed quickly. Future guests may want to get another contact on arrival in case the phones are down and an issue comes up.

The room was just right, with a lovely view of a Colorado sunrise, and the food we tried was homemade. The bagel, scone, and croissants were especially good. I also loved the real fireplace in the lobby, the sun room, and the back patio that leads to a walking trail. The Hand Hotel feels like a great escape. You can tell the building has a lot of history, and the workers are happy to tell you about it. Everyone we met on staff was welcoming and helpful, and seemed genuinely enthusiastic about making guests feel at home. I'd definitely recommend eating here. I'll be back.

The food made the visit for me: a strong Americano, rich decaf mocha, sage-flavored biscuits and gravy, spinach quiche, and a parfait that suited a mountain morning. The Hand Hotel in Fairplay still has that historic Colorado, gold rush era character, with old mining town soul and comforting food. Glad we stopped by.
