We spent time hiking the rolling hills and taking in the views at Ft. Davis State Park, then toured the McDonald Observatory, where Nature meets Science. Later, while walking along State Street in Ft. Davis, we spotted an intriguing rustic sign for the Fort Davis Drug Store. Imagine a remote western town tucked into a quaint mountain valley. That’s Ft. Davis Texas.

When we arrived late, there was no staff around because the drug store was closed and for sale. The downstairs smelled like something had died, and the hotel seemed poorly maintained. We stayed the night on Aug 18, 25, and all of us were sick the next morning. I emailed the hotel but got no response. Nobody else was staying there. Your reply to my review is dishonest. I emailed the support address twice and Carl’s email, and you only answered after I posted this review. There’s no way you didn’t smell that stench downstairs. Why didn’t you reply?

The location is very central, and parking was free and easy right on the street in front. We stayed in room 1, which was clean and very spacious. The bed was big and comfortable, and I liked walking across the original squeaky wood floors. The room also had air conditioning, a microwave, a small fridge, a hair dryer, and a TV. You enter through a keypad, with no staff or office. Inside, there’s an open lounge area with pool, ping pong, and foosball tables. It looks like the downstairs used to be a restaurant. Rooms are upstairs, and stairs are the only way up. The building is about 70 years old, with an interesting wood facade. It’s been remodeled but still has lots of history and character, so finding little details was fun. Even the bullet holes in the glass front window made it feel more like the Wild West.

We really enjoyed staying in this old, rustic drug store and hotel. The clean rooms and the charm throughout the building made me feel like I’d gone back to an older, better time. It was a lovely place to relax, close to the Chihuahuan Desert Research Institute, the University of Texas McDonald Observatory, and the scenic loop around the Davis mountains.

The rooms were spacious and nicely decorated, and I loved the old-time feel and those squeaky wood floors. You can see what the owners are going for with the downstairs game room and restaurant, and I hope they’re able to finish it. I’d have rated it 5* if they’d been more responsive. We wanted to keep both rooms for another night but couldn’t get in touch with them. There’s no food served at the Drugstore Hotel right now, though there are a couple of good places nearby. Each room had a toaster, hot water pot, coffee pot, microwave, and fridge. The stairs may be difficult for anyone with mobility challenges. Great location, too. We went to Marfa and Bid Bend.
