Candlewood Suites Fredericksburg by IHG

The room itself was in bad shape: torn carpet, debris on the floor, peeling flooring, and an unpleasant odor. There was urine and toilet paper in the toilet, and the front desk manager said nobody was available to clean it. He offered neither points for the trouble nor help finding another place when we said we would leave. While I waited to speak with him, I heard him tell another couple he couldn’t honor their reservation, without offering them help either. Before we arrived, someone had called to say the King bed we booked wasn’t available. They offered a queen at the same price and said they would speak to the manager. At check-in, the front desk agent seemed flustered and spoke sharply to someone on the phone while saying IHG was overbooking them online. The person at the desk knew about our issue, but apparently no one had talked to the manager yet.

The staff were amazing and moved us to another room after we found roaches in the second-floor restrooms. We didn’t see more roaches on the fourth floor, but there were a few small-looking bugs, and the fridge smelled strange. The rooms need a serious improvement in cleanliness and quality. Based on the earlier reviews, it seems like there may be a major roach and bug problem.

We were charged twice for a one-night stay, and Booking.com charged us even though I made the reservation at the front desk. The billing issue came on top of an awful stay at Candlewood Suites in Fredericksburg, Virginia. Our room had cockroaches and other bugs, and the kitchenette hadn’t been cleaned. We complained about the smell and condition while we were there, but we’ve never stayed somewhere this filthy. After getting home, we left our luggage outside and carefully unpacked and washed everything. I’ve never complained about a hotel before, but I’m going to contact the BBB and the Health Department in Fredrick’s if ,Virginia.

A month after my stay, I’m still waiting for the $85.78 refund. I stayed in Room 307 on December 12, 2025, and hotel staff acknowledged and documented the roaches. I left and declined a room change because of the conditions. That same night, I completed a refund request and was told it had been approved. Since then, I’ve contacted the hotel several times, spoken with staff, emailed management, and escalated the case through IHG Guest Relations. Each time I’m told the refund will be processed, but nothing happens and nobody follows up. This has been extremely frustrating and disappointing.
