DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel Galveston Beach

The staff were lovely, and having a restaurant and bar right there was a real plus. The location is pretty good, with nice water views from a room facing the seaside. The rooms and pool are dated but clean. There are a few small cosmetic things that could use attention, including some epoxy problems around the swim up bar. I’d stay here again.

The pool is lovely, peaceful, and looks out toward the ocean. We’re here now and really happy with the stay. Emmanuel was so kind when he checked us in. Because of military service and a change in our party, we needed a different room, and he sorted it out without any fuss. He found us a beautiful balcony room overlooking the water, then gave us a couple of drinks on the house because he could tell I was stressed about vacationing with the kids without my husband. I was grateful. It helped me settle into vacation mode.

The staff were great during check in and when we picked up some late night snacks. The room itself wasn't bad, but for what I paid, I expected more. I got a beach view king room, yet the furnishings felt cheap and the balcony wasn't much to write home about. There was only comfortable seating for one, and the plastic chair by the AC would be a rough place to work. The orange decor takes getting used to if bright colors aren't your thing. The bathroom lighting made everything look yellow, so I wasted time checking if the water looked safe. The toilet had a wire out seat instead of anode soft close lid and seat. My 1940 farm house has that, so why not a room costing over $300 a night? I had expected a lot more from the orchid I saw for the room I got. Maybe I'd have been better off with another brand. I stayed one night before a cruise. Check in was ordinary, but I was assigned a different room than the one I picked online. I avoid being by the elevator and ice machine when I travel, and guess what was right outside my room? I've stayed at Double Tree hotels often, and this one probably won't be my choice next time I'm in town.

The location is great, with the beach just across the street, and the staff were nice when we did see them. But we barely had any contact with staff beyond check in, and this did not feel like a standard Hilton. Even the cookies came in packaging. The elevator was broken, and we were on the fifth floor, so we had to carry our bags all the way up. The bed was literally on plywood, with springs digging into my back. The old carpet was dirty, there was hair on the bathroom floor and in the shower, and we saw a cockroach in there too. The balcony was tiny with plastic chairs, nothing like the wicker furniture in the pictures. We stayed two nights, unfortunately. If you know the usual Hilton quality, don't stay here. It felt like Motel 6 quality. I wouldn't recommend it. Stay somewhere else.
