The room was worn and old, smelled dusty, and the microwave had old food in it. The sink wouldn't drain properly. Marriott Bonvoy services also had to provide my folio and credit my Marriott Nights because the hotel failed to do either. What a fall from grace. I was visiting Gilbert with my family for a big wedding and had recommended the Residence Inn by Marriott Phoenix Gilbert because I'm a Marriott member. That was a mistake. After three nights, I can say this was the worst Marriott stay I've had, and my affection for the brand is gone. I've been a Gold Member for life, with hundreds of nights at Marriott properties over 30 years. Two of my recent Marriott reviews have also been terrible. This franchise feels sick and is getting worse. I'm looking into moving my status and points to another franchise, and will keep you posted. Check-in was bad from the start. I arrived with two siblings and their spouses. There wasn't a long line and it wasn't a difficult process, but the desk clerk was rude, surly, impatient, and self absorbed. As my sister and her spouse walked away, he muttered, “There’s a colorful group.” We called him out because he used “colorful” in a racist and derogatory way to describe friendly people. He got defensive and angry when challenged, and seemed poorly trained. He shouldn't have said anything. I asked for an upgrade, as usual. He curtly said there were “no upgrades available” without even pretending to check hotel status or my membership. There wasn't even a friendly apology. I can't remember the last time I got an upgrade at Marriott. It feels like bait-and-switch and a con, and reflects how low the franchise has sunk.

A really nice lobby and large, well-laid-out rooms make this a great place for travelers. The paid laundry room has several washers and dryers, so there shouldn't be a line. Breakfast is free, with a big selection of freshly cooked hot food.

We were promised conjoined rooms several times, and multiple workers confirmed that, but they weren't provided when we checked in. This was for a wedding, and no one apologized when we had to change our plans or to the bride for the trouble. One room also had an issue with its door and lock. When we went to the front desk to ask about switching, the worker seemed annoyed. Someone stole the catalytic converter from our truck, which was parked in the hotel lot near the entrance. I know that may not be the hotel's fault, but they won't answer my calls about camera footage. I've left three voicemails on three consecutive days for both the regular manager and assistant manager.

My 81 year old mother booked a room for the wrong cancer treatment date by mistake. She didn't know it was non-refundable, so after she canceled, they kept the $360 she paid. She has stage 4 cancer. Why would anyone cancel a non-refundable room if they knew? There are plenty of rooms available at this location, so it feels like they swindled an 81 year old cancer patient out of her money. I tried seven times to speak to a manager and left voicemail messages, but got no response. Joey, the assistant GM I kept being referred to, never answered or returned my call.

Being close enough to walk to MD Anderson Cancer Center was a real help. My terminally ill brother found the beds easier to get in and out of, which mattered because of their height. Really glad there’s a Residence Inn nearby.
