El Rey Motel

For $60 total, this was good value for a night in Globe, Arizona. The room was basic and had a few very minor cleanliness issues, but the shower was absolutely amazing and the staff were friendly.

The first few mornings, someone tried to unlock our door and woke me up. I looked out and saw a man I didn’t know jiggling the handle. I was alone because my husband had already left for work in town, and the whole stay felt really sketchy. I was there for a week, with the reservation paid for, yet the manager, I assume, came by well before checkout to ask if I was staying or leaving. The room had dirt or sand underfoot as soon as I walked in. I’d stayed here before and it hadn’t been run like this. Keep your faith up and pay attention to what’s around you.

The rooms are small, there are cockroaches, and the shower water stays cold. The place looks run down, and this time you really should judge it by its cover. The owners will harass you until they call the police. The police came and had nothing to say because I hadn’t done anything wrong, and the owner went back into the office with his head down. I’d only stay if there were no other options, and I’d leave as soon as another place became available. You may regret staying.

It’s a budget motel, so don’t expect concierge service or valet parking. Our room was clean, the beds were comfortable, the showers were hot, and it was fairly quiet. The room had recently been upgraded and painted, though the furniture was definitely funky. There were a lot of construction workers, and their rigs started up early, which was kind of annoying. My biggest complaint was the lack of paper cups. We’d stayed at Travelodge the night before, and that room was much worse, noisy and dirty.
