Down Towner Inn

I’ve stayed in more than 1,000 hotels, and this place does the basics well. The room was clean, check-in took about a minute, and the main strip in town is an easy walk away. Nothing fancy, but if you want a warm room and a clean bed, it works. I’m completely satisfied.

The manager was friendly and helpful, and I’d stay here again. The location, a block off the main drag, felt quieter and less busy. My room was clean, the shower had good pressure and hot water, and the bed was okay for my bad back, though the mattress felt a little floppy. There was a coffee maker, mini-fridge, microwave, and Wi-Fi in the room, but I didn’t use them. It’s good value and service, just don’t expect the Ritz.

The staff were nice, but that only helps so much. The place needs serious cleaning and maintenance. Dirt and dust were everywhere, the faucets were filthy, the drains clogged and took ages to empty, and there were holes in the carpet. I even found a toenail in the bed. I thought a feather quill was poking me until I pulled it from the sheet and saw what it was. At $75 a night, I wouldn’t stay again. If they did general repairs, replaced the sheets, and improved the cleaning, the place might be worth the price. As things stand, I wouldn’t recommend it, even if it were the last room in town.

Mike the manager is nice, but seems out of his depth. The maintenance man, on the other hand, is very nice and capable. I gave two stars for being close to town, but the maid service gets none. She swapped the towels and took out the trash, yet left the sink, bathroom cabinet, and tub dirty. There was dust and buildup on the tray under the coffee maker, and mold in the dirt-caked corners and on the shower curtain. She didn’t make the beds either. I’d cleared the counters, beds, tables, and other surfaces before asking for the room to be cleaned. I travel with cleaning supplies, so I ended up cleaning it myself. It left me wondering whether the sheets had been changed before my stay. The whole thing disgusted me.
