The Beach lodge is rustic, and the bugs were frustrating: we found a lot of ants in the kitchen and spiders and webs throughout the house. I also found it odd that none of the doors lock, especially since two bedrooms share a bathroom. Still, the manager is very nice and helpful, and town has plenty of good food options, bars, and a nearby Safeway, all an easy couple of minutes away. We were there for a family wedding. The river is just a minute or two on foot, though the beach is rocky, so bring a chair if you want to sit by the water. It wasn’t too crowded, and kayak rentals are right there.

This really wasn’t my kind of place. I’m not keen on freshwater beaches, and I’d take a pretty coastal harbor over a muddy stretch of slow river any day. It might suit people who want to kayak or go tubing. The area felt pretty sketchy to me.

It was okay. We went boating and had fun, though the water wasn’t very deep, around six feet at most. I saw a lot of LGBTQ people on the beach.

There’s a relaxed summer feel at Johnson’s Beach that’s hard to find elsewhere, and it has that classic Russian River charm. Each visit feels like the right mix of unwinding and enjoying the place. The staff are friendly and the atmosphere is peaceful. It really is one of Guerneville’s gems.

The water was just right for a dip. It was a little breezy Thursday afternoon in May, but nothing that would put you off coming. It was quiet before the summer season picked up.
