The bed and linens were clean, but that was about the only thing I could say in the hotel’s favor. The room had a heavy musty carpet smell, so I went out for candles since I didn’t have time to find somewhere else. Even after leaving one lit while I was out, the odor was still there when I returned. I was exhausted and tried to sleep anyway. At about 2:45 a.m., I woke to loud, steady thumping. I couldn’t tell where it was coming from, and no one was at the desk when I went to the lobby. It went on for most of the night. By 7 a.m. I gave up, packed, and left. I’m not sure whether the lack of sleep or the room’s odor and condition caused it, but I felt sick the rest of the day, with my throat and sinuses burning. I booked because it was close to a job that would keep me out late. The hotel’s appearance should have been a warning, and there were people around the property who seemed sketchy. I could overlook some of that, but together with everything else, it was too much. The coffee shop was good, though I later learned it isn’t part of the hotel. I won’t stay here again.

Avoid this place. It was dirty, and I found the staff rude. I was told my son had been rude, so they would keep my $50 security deposit. When I called to ask about it, the clerk hung up on me. Apparently hurting someone’s feelings can cost you $50. If you believe the hotel has kept money unfairly, I’d suggest disputing it with your bank or credit card company and filing with the Maryland attorney general’s office and the Better Business Bureau of Maryland.

The manager was friendly and checked in by text, though I never met her in person. Liz, thank you for being kind. I’d urge the hotel to have the hallways cleaned and to fix the TVs and the room chairs. I stayed for three nights over Christmas. The hotel is near the highway, restaurants, and grocery stores. My room had been renovated with a new wooden floor, but the building itself is very old and still under renovation. The chair was worn and dirty, the hallway carpet didn’t look vacuumed, the elevator was dirty and smelled, and the heater in my room was dusty and old. The TV kept reporting a disconnected antenna. A front desk woman came up and got it working, but it failed again after I left the room. When I went back to ask, she seemed annoyed and gave directions that didn’t help, so I figured it out myself. I was also uneasy the first night after seeing some frightening drunk people smoking in the hallway. The place felt almost haunted.

The best part was the little coffee shop next door, a charming spot with delicious coffee. The rest of my stay at the Hagerstown APM Inn left me unimpressed. The building and surrounding area felt unsafe and sketchy, and there was no lobby staff when I arrived, which should have been a warning. In my room, the fridge wasn’t plugged in, the carpet was badly torn, the pillows were unusually thick and uncomfortable, and the bathtub looked black and moldy. I was also billed incorrectly, and getting that fixed took some effort. I suppose some issues come with the price, but I wouldn’t choose it again.

This place was exactly what my kids and I needed while we were between homes. It’s safe, comfortable, friendly, and affordable. It isn’t the Ritz, but it was a real lifesaver for my family, and I’d absolutely stay here again.
