Hamtramck Hostel

I first booked this spot because it was close to the venue for a concert. The area has lots of food nearby, and getting around the rest of Detroit is easy. It also has a really relaxing feel, so I'd stay here again when I get the chance.

There are lots of family-run shops and places to eat in this family-oriented neighborhood, and it's close to bus lines. You can hear the call to prayer too. My room was functional and fairly cozy, with fresh linens and a towel. The floors were dusty and the place could use a good scrub, but the room was fine if you don't mind that. Shared bathrooms were cleaned well. They have grab bars and shower seats for a couple of residents who use walkers. Let the staff know if the toilet paper runs out or someone leaves a mess. The fridge was already packed, so I had nowhere to put my food. I'm not sure how often it's cleared out. Staff stay in the hostel rooms as well, so some of the food may be theirs. There's coin-operated laundry in the basement. A clean, new laundromat is also within walking distance, with a change machine and detergent vending machine.

Meka was so kind and made sure I had what I needed during my one-night stay. I had a really nice time at this hostel in the Detroit area, and I'll book here again.

I left after arriving because the place made me uncomfortable. A staff member was on speakerphone talking about a nearby room being shut for a bug investigation, and the clutter and lack of cleanliness added to that feeling. There were broken tiles on the floor too. I've stayed in all sorts of hostels around the world, including basic ones with private rooms, and while the staff here were friendly, this one didn't seem well maintained. It felt more like a shelter than a hostel. The photos should be updated so travelers have a more accurate idea of what to expect.
