Red Roof Inn & Suites Hazleton

I drove an hour after reserving two non-smoking rooms, but the whole place smelled of cigarettes when I arrived. The entrance doors and windows didn’t seem right, and the room was unhygienic with stuff all over. The front desk person confirmed I’d paid for two non-smoking rooms, then said everyone who stays there smokes. I was furious and asked how to get a refund because I couldn’t stay in a smoking environment after paying for non-smoking rooms. She flat-out said they don’t give refunds and told me to call back. Several weeks later, I’m still waiting for my money. Stay away unless that’s the kind of environment you want.

We left after getting a refund. The first room was dirty, with trash, a tub that had black stuff on the bottom, and a chair that definitely had bodily fluids on it. The bed looked like it had been lazily remade with used sheets, the room smelled like body odor, and the A/C was broken open. We asked for another room, but its door was already open. There were nails on the desk. The guy said they had changed the locks and didn’t seem concerned about the open door or nails.

The room we were first given was very nice and seemed like it could be clean and safe for families and pets. It was spacious, with one king bed and a separate living room area, and we accessed it from the parking lot instead of from inside a building. But my friend didn’t want to share a bed with my dog, which was fair, so we quickly and efficiently got switched to the two queens we’d originally booked. That room was pet friendly, but smelled funky, though not like cigarettes. The sheets were stained, the towels had someone else’s hair, and the tub was grimy. We didn’t see bedbugs, at least. We felt safe in Hazleton, but less so in that room: you could enter the building without a swipe key, and one camera didn’t cover all the hallway rooms. We also thought there might have been prostitution in the room next door. We could hear threatening language, arguing, and yelling, which made us uncomfortable. For what we paid, I guess we got what we paid for.

We stay in the king suite each year, and for the price, the amount of room is great. I’ve used this location for years because it’s near Evergreen Raceway and have never had an issue. Staff have been great every time. The rooms work well for a night or two. Towels and sheets were clean, though we’re not picky. The rooms are outdated, the tub was peeling, and the floors had marks, but none of that would stop me staying. Breakfast is small, but it’s food, and there are places to eat within 2-5 miles if you don’t like what they serve. My room had no mold smell, the AC and heat were fine, the lights worked, and outlets were where we needed them. The toilet was clean and flushed, and the kitchen area had a working fridge and freezer. We had a balcony, and outside lights came through a gap in the blinds, but it wasn’t a big issue since we sleep with our eyes closed.
