The best thing about this place was its location. We booked it largely because of the pool for our kid, though, and probably wouldn’t risk staying again. The staff were friendly and had good attitudes, but a language barrier meant one of our two rooms was cleaned and the other wasn’t. Breakfast was the same each morning, pretty average, and food and guest messes weren’t cleared or replenished quickly. We stayed four nights in two rooms over Labor Day weekend. At first glance, things seemed fine, but the rooms smelled musty, almost like mold. They needed a deep clean in the corners, along baseboards, under beds and tables, and in the bathrooms around the toilets. There was dirt, food debris, and cobwebs, as if they hadn’t been thoroughly cleaned for months. The faded acrylic shower panels had gone from white to a yellow like vanilla pudding, and the bathrooms need updating. They were so cramped that I’m 5'8" and could barely get into the toilet and shower area and close the door. My 6'3" husband bumped into everything in there. Taller or bigger people may want to stay elsewhere. The sink is outside the bathroom, in the walkway beside the sleeping area. Turning on lights or making noise there to brush teeth, wash hands, put on makeup, or get food could wake anyone sleeping. The mini-fridges were almost off, so we kept our food in the car cooler until they reached temperature. Ice was only on the main floor in a strange back room where staff do laundry. There was no water available after they locked the breakfast area in the morning. The tiny coffee bar was a saving grace. In one room, the A/C ignored every setting. The sheets and towels were clean. I always check for bugs right away and didn’t see any. The pool wasn’t good. I used to be a water safety instructor, and something seemed off. We did swim, and the water was very warm. Chlorine got in my eyes and caused an immediate chemical burn. I flushed them with tap water, but they burned for two weeks, and I had to call the eye doctor for special drops. Evening parking was a big challenge, and many guests took up two spaces with pickups and toy-hauling trailers.

The hot tub was dirty, and its jets barely worked. The rooms are dated, though clean. Still, after two nights I’d make this my regular stop in the area. You get good value for your money, as long as you’re looking for a decent place to sleep and a good breakfast rather than high-end accommodations. Breakfast was the best hotel breakfast I’ve had. Along with the usual items, there was a buffet with sausage, potatoes, biscuits and gravy, and eggs. One day they had scrambled eggs; the next, egg and cheese omelets and fried eggs. The location worked perfectly for us, and Chute Rooster is less than a three-minute walk away. The lot is huge, with plenty of room if you’re hauling an ATV or UTV.

The hotel was handy for getting around South Dakota, and breakfast had lots of choices. The rooms were nice and clean, though the sheets had little pills from being washed so often. I asked the front desk for newer sheets, and she was happy to help make us more comfortable.

I booked a room in July for a wedding weekend, October 24-26, but when I arrived the lot was empty. I figured that might just be because it was the off-season. Then I found the registration door locked. A nearby motel told me this one had closed for the season on the 19th. Everything worked out in the end, and so far it hasn’t cost me anything, but someone dropped the ball. I’d hope the motel knew about the reservation well in advance, but who knows? We never saw the rooms or service, so I can’t score those. The Hill City area is beautiful, so that gets the location score. I’m not sure whether Priceline or Golden Spike was responsible.

We had a great stay. The hotel was close to everything we wanted to do in the Black Hills, and parking was easy. We liked having both an indoor and outdoor pool, and the shower was great. The rooms were very clean, and the staff were quick and friendly. Breakfast was good and included. The beds weren’t the most comfortable, but overall we were really pleased.
