I had a lovely stay and really enjoyed chatting with the other guests. It’s a small, homey hostel, close to shops, the farmers’ market, and bus stops. The beds were comfy and quiet, and I appreciated that the women’s room cost the same as the mixed dorm. There aren’t outlets beside the beds, which can be a pain, though it did get people out of their bunks to charge their phones and hang out. A staff member pointed me to a waterfall, and I had an amazing time there. Mahalo for a great stay! :)

We started out in a shared dorm for our first night, then the staff moved us to a private room, which was really nice. The beds were super comfy, and everyone on staff was friendly. It’s such a cute place, and after nearly a year of traveling, this ended up being one of our favorite hostels. We’d definitely come back if we’re in the area again.

The location is good, though walking outside at night didn’t feel very safe to me, and Hilo is a somewhat strange little town. Inside, it felt more like a home than a hostel: there’s a nice living room for socializing, plus thoughtful extras like shampoo, toiletries, tea, and coffee. The rooms are spacious, the bed layout works well, and the beds are very comfortable, but there aren’t power outlets near them. I met some great people, and the staff were genuinely friendly and nice to talk with.

Nicole, CJ, and Jamie listened to my concerns and were accommodating. They gave me a private room without charging extra, even though I’d nearly left soon after checking in. The staff had a great vibe, but I felt uneasy around some of the other guests. The outside looked rundown and a bit dicey. The inside was clean, though I wish more thought had gone into the setup: the bunks could use curtains, rooms need enough outlets, and the bathrooms need more stalls. I’ve stayed in lots of hostels, and I wouldn’t choose this one again. Next time I’ll stay at Howzit…

January 2025, part 2: I’m jealous of the guests at Hilo Bay Hostel aka Howzit, who don’t know what it’s like to have a Big Island Hostel-sized hole in their hearts. It doesn’t feel cozy or like coming home at all. January 2025, part 1: I was heartbroken to find out Big Island Hostel had suddenly closed for good. I’d hoped to stay there the following week. The thoughtful little touches went beyond what you get at many hostels, and walking up those stairs always felt like coming home. Best of luck to the former proprietors with whatever comes next. The last time I visited was March 2024, and I kept extending my stay. I came back today to reread the reviews and find the name of the very kind person who was often working reception then. We had so many enlightening conversations. Every staff member I’ve met there has been 1000% aloha. I stayed four times since 2021, and whether I’d been exploring Hawaii or had been off island too long, I always felt at home and looked forward to returning. It’s cozy, and the different areas are laid out so well that it never felt crowded, even with lots of guests. In about 14 days there, I only had to wait for a shower once. The friendly staff can help you find what you need, and if the hostel doesn’t have it, there are plenty of places nearby. It’s easy to cook and store food in the kitchen, or find food close by. Parking onsite can get tight, but it’s a good base for exploring even if you aren’t driving. I’d be so glad if my travels brought me back to Big Island Hostel soon.
