For what we paid, about $400 a night, I’d call this a budget motel on AMI. There are local beachfront rentals that cost much more, so we adjusted our expectations. Here’s how it went for us. Getting around on foot was easy, especially to Holmes Beach, about a five-minute walk to the end of the street. Hurricane Hanks, The Ugly Grouper, and lots of other restaurants and shops are only a few minutes away. We were in end unit 801, right by Gulf Drive, and it was loud: sirens, revving engines, and people passing. Bring earplugs or a white noise machine. The room was clean when we arrived, and housekeeping made the beds and brought fresh towels daily. The beds were okay, though there were a few mystery stains on the sofa and bed pillows. The room had the basics you’d expect at a budget motel, such as toiletries, a hair dryer, and a mini fridge, but no luxury. The pool was in terrible shape, with sand across the bottom and abandoned chairs, towels, and toys scattered around. It looked like a dumping spot, so we didn’t use it. The sitting areas are cute, but you’d be right outside somebody else’s room, which felt awkward unless it was the room you were staying in. Check-in is at Anna Maria Beach Resort, a five-to-ten-minute drive away depending on traffic. That part wasn’t a big deal, but if you need towels or toilet paper, you have to drive there each time. The walls are really thin. We could hear neighbors talking and turning over in squeaky beds. A couple of times, other guests smoked weed by the pool and ignored quiet hours. We let it go because we didn’t want a confrontation, but families with kids should keep in mind the sort of guests a budget motel can attract. AMI has a good-time, party atmosphere, so this might work as a place to crash if you’re there for the bars, but I wouldn’t pick it for young children. I wouldn’t stay here again. I’d pay another $100 a night for a more comfortable place with services on site and better amenities.

Eugene and Kei were such responsive, accommodating hosts, and this little Bay St. Louis, MS gem is well worth recommending. We stayed three nights and plan to return in April for Jazz Fest in New Orleans. On weekends they serve a nice breakfast, and the pantry has treats and everything for a BYO setup.

Good value and good quality in a really quiet area. The shops are nearby, and the beach is less than a ten-minute walk away.

The location is a real plus. It’s an easy walk to some of AMI’s best spots, and though the beach is about half a mile away, the access at the end of the street is uncrowded and has some of the better parking options. We drove there each morning. Road noise wasn’t a problem for us, despite what some earlier reviews said. We were in Unit #4, a pleasant studio-style one-bedroom with a bed, couch, small dining table, kitchen, and bathroom. Guests share the pool, common area, and grills and seating with the other six units. The property is nice, but a few maintenance issues kept me from giving five stars. The front door worked, but had wide gaps that let in light and hot air. One window unit had to cool the whole place, which was a stretch, though manageable for the time of year. There were also two ceiling fans and a portable one. Both TVs displayed “Please Wait” for most of our stay. We figured it was probably a cable issue but couldn’t resolve it, and our text to the person responsible went unanswered. I paid quite a bit for just two nights, and at that price I’d expect those issues to be addressed. The unit is small, so I wouldn’t choose it for a longer stay, but for a couple it’s a great location and I’d stay again.

My wife and I visited at the end of July 2013 for our anniversary. We found the room clean, the bed comfortable, and the accommodations very good. The staff or owner was friendly, and the beach was close enough to walk to, maybe 50 yards. The area was very quiet on Wednesday. We were told the island gets packed on weekends.
