Ala Moana Hotel by Mantra

We’ve enjoyed staying here over the years, and it’s my first choice when we come back to Oahu. The location is so convenient, and I love relaxing on the lanai and watching everything below drift by. We had two rooms, one with a full ocean view and one with a partial view. Both had a microwave and a larger fridge. From check-in through checkout, service was pleasant. We didn’t need daily cleaning, but the maids would ask if we wanted anything when we saw them around. The gift shops are fun, too. Diane at one of them sold me several outfits in past years, and this time I found more clothes and a beautiful Tahitian pearl necklace. I also rented a car for a day from Ones car rental inside the hotel. It was all smooth and easy. We didn’t try the breakfast restaurant, but one night we ate at Signature steak house on the 36th floor. Great food, service, and views.

Breakfast was good, around an 8/10, but most of the stay was disappointing. The rooms were tiny, and my mother found bugs in the room next to ours. The TV had no channel guide, so figuring out what was on meant flipping through everything. Our truck couldn’t fit in the self-parking garage because the clearance was so low, so we had to pay $50 for valet to park it elsewhere. The walls were very thin. We could hear people walking upstairs and doors opening and slamming in the hallway, which made it hard to relax. The pool area was also much smaller than expected. We likely wouldn’t stay here again.

The beds were comfortable, and having a microwave was handy. The location is good too, right by a mall and about 10 minutes from a nearby beach. Cleanliness was a problem. There was hair on the bathroom walls, in the sink, and on the floor, which felt unpleasant and unhygienic. At check-in, we got very little information about the amenities, and there weren’t clear signs for the pool or fitness center. I eventually found them on the third floor. I was also frustrated by the towel rules. Guests are reportedly charged $25 if towels aren’t returned during certain hours. I asked if I could leave mine at the front desk and was told no, in a way that felt unwelcoming. Better cleaning, clearer amenity information, and an easier towel process would improve the experience.

Even with the rain, we had such a nice stay. It was easy to have everything we needed without leaving the property. The lobby felt safe and spacious, with a good mix of restaurants and shops. I loved having Starbucks in the lobby, and there’s a nice steak house with views on the 36th floor. The rooms feel modern, and the pool and cabanas are beautiful, with towel service. Dada salon, spa and cafe with bar is right by the pool, which is great. There’s also an awesome gym, steam room, and sauna. The place seems very well managed and planned.
