Best Western Plus Birmingham Inn & Suites

The late checkout situation was frustrating. We paid $22 to stay until 1:00 PM, more than the roughly $15 we’d paid before, but staff kept knocking and woke us anyway. They could’ve checked the reservation first. We’ve stayed here at least three times, and only the first visit was good. On the last two, the rooms were only moderately clean, the beds looked somewhat dirty, and the air conditioner made a loud noise the whole time. Check-in also felt awkward and unwelcoming because the older gentleman at the desk came across as passive-aggressive. We expect to feel welcome as paying guests. We gave the hotel three chances hoping for consistency, but it feels like a 50/50 gamble. We won’t be back.

The staff were helpful and attentive, even bringing out things we’d left behind to the car. The bathroom and beds were very clean. A good choice for a mid-tier hotel.

The last straw for us was the state of the room. There was a live cockroach in the bathroom, stains on the comforters on both queen beds, and an old, cold smell. The phone didn’t work, which made trying to report problems even more of a hassle. The overpowering perfume scent was everywhere, from the lobby to the hallways and elevator. It was so strong my wife developed a nauseating headache on the way to the room. They seem to have scent machines all over, and the smell isn’t pleasant. We skipped breakfast and went to Chick-Fil-A because of it. This was our second stay and will be our last. Other customers have mentioned what seems to be a management change. What had been a nice stay at a nice price no longer feels like either. I’d put a night here at about $45 all in. Unless you want that heavy old-lady perfume smell burning your eyes, keep looking. Best Western Plus? No. Best Western Minus.

Really nice amount of space, and the bedding was so heavenly it made me want a new bed. Everything was very clean. Everyone I dealt with, from the reservation to check-in and check-out, was exceptionally pleasant and helpful.
