Independence Stay

The only thing I wished for was a longer stay. The room was spacious and very comfortable, and housekeeping was on point. The hotel is well maintained and close to everything, and Houghton is a little treasure. Rebekah was a delight to talk with. She shared lovely stories about growing up in the area and suggested things we really enjoyed. Her hospitality was so sweet. It's only two stories, with no elevator, though the stairs weren't bad if you can manage them. Keep that in mind if stairs are an issue. There's an exercise room but no pool. They don't serve breakfast, though you can heat breakfast sandwiches in your room, and they have coffee, orange or apple juice, small pastries, and yogurts. Independence Stay in Houghton MI was a wonderful experience from beginning to end.

We thought the website might not be working because we never got a text or email confirmation and our card wasn't charged, so we booked somewhere else. Then, on the reservation date, they texted us out of nowhere. We explained we had made other arrangements since their system never notified us, but they said they would charge us anyway. They kept sending a link to somebody else's reservation, and we repeatedly told them it wasn't ours. I don't recommend this place. I'm currently disputing a $274 charge for a one-night stay we never booked. 🙄 Guess they're desperate to make a buck.

We only stayed one night, but had such a lovely experience at this wonderful little hotel. The room was spotless, and the reception had free coffee, tea, and snacks, so you definitely won't go hungry. It was dog-friendly, perfect for us and our small senior pup. A special thanks to Danielle, the lovely, polite woman who helped with the booking. We really appreciated her help and highly recommend the place to anyone visiting this amazing historical location.

The hotel seems well maintained and is decent enough, but service could be better. You can book online, though you can't cancel online. There's just one person at the front desk, so if they're busy, you may be waiting who knows how long. With no daily housekeeping, you also have to go to the desk for everyday things like toilet paper, which gets frustrating.
