Getting around the building could be a real problem if you have mobility issues. The elevator stops at the third floor, and reaching floors four through six means taking steep, shallow stairs. The breakfast room is somewhere between the third and fifth floors, so check that you can get to it from your floor. We came in through the back parking lot, which opened right onto the fifth floor and our room. The hall looked dated, but our room itself was mostly nice, and the staff were friendly. We could walk everywhere, and being so close to downtown was great. The pullout bed was unusable. When it was opened, there was no mattress cover, and the mattress was dirty and had hairs on it, so the person slept on the couch instead. It was graduation weekend, so asking for another room seemed pointless. Then on Sunday the door mechanism failed. The desk person didn't know how to change the batteries and couldn't reach anyone to help. We waited hours for the next shift, but that person couldn't get it working either. We had skipped lunch so we could stay in and let each other in, and eventually had to leave to get food. While we were out, the desk person somehow got the door working again. Maintenance wasn't due in until Monday. A door can malfunction, but there should've been someone on staff or available to fix it. When I brought up both problems at checkout, the man at the desk interrupted before I could finish explaining. Maybe it was already too late to offer anything, if they were going to. I was definitely disappointed that we couldn't use one of the beds we paid for.

The room was clean and had plenty of towels, and breakfast turned out better than we expected, with a good range of options laid out nicely. We picked the hotel for the price during our visit and how close it was to Michigan Tech for a college visit. The unusual layout caught our eye, too. When we checked in on Jan 19th, the woman at the front desk was warm and helpful, and pointed us toward local places that were still open for food.

The rooms were spacious and very well kept, and the cleaning staff did a thorough job. Outside, the hotel looks battered. Inside, ramps connect the different levels, as the building climbs a sloped cliff up to the road above.

The woman working breakfast was working her butt off, and she was the one bright spot. Everything else felt subpar for the price. 10/10 not recommended. Parking is basically nonexistent. They put guests on the fifth floor with fewer than 10 parking spaces available, and you have to cross the limited lot to reach the elevator, which only goes to the third floor. They call this a suite, but it was old and clearly had been a smoking room. The heater/AC unit was moldy. Both beds sagged in the middle, the shower floor felt slimy because the drain barely worked, and the water pressure was nearly nonexistent. The door frame had been broken and screwed back together, and the walls were thin enough that we heard everything in the hall and on the stairs. There weren't even garbage bags in the two cans, and the room was booked for two adults and three kids without enough linen for everyone. The photo shows a nice dust outline where the towels go. All four shelves looked like that.

For almost $300 a night, this was a huge letdown. The rooms smelled bad and were filthy. There were stains on the floor that might've been blood or feces, with a chair placed over them. The bathroom was so cramped you had to squeeze between the toilet and door to get into the shower, and you could hear people next door or in the hallway, plus doors slamming. The shower, hot tub, and sauna were really nice. That's the only reason I gave it two stars instead of one. I've stayed at several nicer Quality Inns for half the price, and this one was easily the worst.
