We spent two wonderful weeks here. The room was clean and well furnished, with a bathtub, a great hot shower, a microwave, and a fridge. Best of all was the dedicated workstation, which was thoughtfully set up with both front and back lighting. It made teleconference calls comfortable and convenient. The place was quiet, too, with excellent noise insulation. We never heard guests in other rooms. We don’t drive, so we were pleasantly surprised by how easy it was to get around. The nearest bus stop was walkable, along with Walmart, other big stores, and several excellent restaurants. Our window looked out toward the city skyline, which was lovely by day and at night. We appreciated the breakfasts, despite what some other reviews say. There were two kinds of cornflakes, good milk and juice, cupcakes, coffee, bananas, and waffles you could make yourself on a waffle iron with maple syrup. If you wanted something else, you could ask. Breakfast was filling enough that we weren’t hungry the rest of the day. Tom and Kevin at reception were also wonderful, and we’re grateful to them. We did have a few minor issues with housekeeping. One time, a cleaner interrupted an important conference call two hours before our planned checkout. There were two “do not disturb” signs on the door, but she knocked loudly, shouted, and opened it. We had chosen not to request cleaning during our two-week stay so as not to bother the staff, but at checkout she asked for a propina, which felt inconsiderate to us. The housekeeping staff were also the only source of noise, often shouting to each other in the hallways. We think management should revisit how “do not disturb” signs are respected, especially during working hours, since interruptions can be disruptive when guests are on professional calls. We believe better communication could resolve this, and expect future stays would be perfectly fine.

The room was dirty, with stained towels and unclean sheets. The pillows were tiny and lumpy, and when I asked for more, I was told there weren’t any. The bed was awful, and I hardly slept. The night manager wasn’t helpful and seemed eager to get rid of us so he could return to his TV show. The man at the desk in the morning was helpful, though. Breakfast was the worst I’ve had at a hotel: stale muffins, coffee that tasted like someone had put out a cigarette in it, and frozen eggs for us to microwave. I’ll contact management directly to try to resolve this stay.

Housekeeping knocked my $400 retainer onto the floor and swept it into the trash. I have a recording where she admits sweeping it up and throwing it away. The manager said he’d speak to her and get back to me, but it’s been two weeks. I have his cell number and have called and texted several times. Still no reply.

The staff were welcoming, friendly, and efficient from check-in, which was quick and easy. My room was clean, well maintained, and more spacious than I expected. The bed was very comfortable, and I slept well both nights. Having a microwave, mini-fridge, and coffee maker in the room was convenient, too. It’s close to downtown, with restaurants, shops, and the freeway easy to reach. Parking was free and easy to access, a real plus in the city. Breakfast was simple but nice for grabbing something before heading out. For a budget-friendly hotel, I couldn’t have asked for more. My stay at Howard Johnson by Wyndham in Houston Heights was clean, comfortable, safe, and backed by great service. I’ll stay here again on my next trip to Houston.

The pictures on the main page must be from when this place first opened. I barely recognized it, even though we stayed three nights. It’s a motel, and you need a vehicle to get around. The rooms are very basic and clean, but badly in need of modernizing. It’s extremely noisy at night beside the freeway, with traffic and trucks going nonstop. The fridge and air conditioning rattled all night as well.
