Move-in was easy, and management and coworkers were great. The atmosphere is nice, the gym equipment is current and all working, and the pool and convenient dog park are clean. There’s a nice game room, plenty of green space, friendly neighbors, secure parking, and elevator access. It’s close to everything and to public transport. I’d recommend getting a little cart or wagon for hauling groceries.

One resident parking gate has been wide open for a long time, and there’s no security around the building. Homeless people camp and hang out in the parking garage. The elevators are always breaking: one has been down since January, another for over a month, and only the elevator by the leasing office works. If that one goes too, we won’t be able to get groceries up and down to our rooms. It’s hard to believe Greystar manages this place. It’s a real disappointment that Greystar is running a dumpster and acting like a slumlord. What happens if a resident or lodgeur guest has a serious emergency and needs paramedics, other first responders, or police, but they can’t reach us because the elevators are out and they don’t know the only working one is in the lobby? This place deserves zero stars. I’m done staying silent.

The elevator nearest me has now been broken for two months, and that’s happened repeatedly during my year here. The other elevators also break frequently. About a week after this latest breakdown, a homeless person defecated in the stairwell during the freeze, so management locked public access to the first and second levels. Residents on my side could no longer reach the bottom level without crossing the whole building. Then the key fob scanners in the stairwell stopped working, including by the broken elevator leading to the third-level resident parking and other residential floors. People had to prop doors open. Eventually one door wouldn’t latch at all and could be pushed open without the handle, leaving supposedly secure areas open to anyone. Around the same time management reopened the first and second public stairwell levels, making it easy for anyone to get into resident parking and apartments. Car break-ins already happen often in the public parking areas. Through all of this, the elevator has stayed broken. There doesn’t seem to be any urgency to fix these problems, which is concerning given the disregard for resident safety. They seem to care only about the amenities. The dog park also seems neglected: poop bags can run out for a day or two, I’ve found glass shards there, and poop can stay on the turf for days. The supposedly secure gate to third-level resident parking is often broken and left open. The public exit ticket machine regularly malfunctions, causing long waits for residents leaving. Communication with the leasing office is poor too. I’d deter anyone from renting here because management is absolutely terrible.

For about two weeks, I stayed at Mid Main Lofts while looking for a permanent place. Its location sold me: it’s right in front of the red line, so I could reach the TMC and MD Anderson Cancer Center in under 15 minutes, which was a joy. The units are quite new and had everything I needed, including a washer and dryer, plus a great view of Houston. The stone floors matched the corridor and gave the apartment a more basic, industrial look than the hard wooden floors in most apartments. When I needed to extend my booking, my original unit wasn’t available, but management found a solution and let me stay in another unit as long as I needed. My key fob didn’t work when I picked up the keys from the lockbox, so I couldn’t use the elevators or stairs. I ran around with my suitcases trying to reach the apartment and eventually got in by sneaking in with a neighbor. They did offer phone help, but I’d expect management to check that keys work before leaving them in a lockbox for pickup. The area has a lot of homeless people. That may not bother everyone, but coming from Europe I found it shocking and felt unsafe. There are no grocery shops nearby either. Without a car, the closest supermarket is Randalls, at least a 20-minute walk away, so be prepared to carry groceries or use Uber or public transport. Neighbors above smoked weed, and the smell came through the ventilation and made the apartment stink. It’s noisy too, with traffic, sirens, and loud street music. The apartment was okay for a few days, but I’m not sure I’d choose it for a year-long lease.

The bedrooms were clean and well equipped, and the location is great. Getting the keys was very smooth. Access was a bit confusing, though, and the elevator nearest us never worked. It was okay overall, and I’d come back.
